A major summit will soon take place, where 30 new measures to tackle the disease are set to be discussed. In rare cases, it can be transmitted to humans.</p><p>The disease spreads between animals mainly through respiratory secretions, but contaminated feed, water, and shared grazing areas can also play a role. This group includes farming organisations, vets, policy experts and environmental voices, ensuring any changes balance disease control with practical farming realities.</p><p>An interim report was handed to the Minister for Agriculture earlier this year, setting out a new direction for tackling TB. The group’s final report — due soon — is expected to contain clear recommendations for changes to testing, cattle movement controls, compensation schemes and biosecurity rules.</p><p>Pressure to act is growing. Ireland’s herd incidence rate is now more than double the EU average. For many farms, that could mean big financial savings.</p><p>In 2024, farms hit by TB breakdowns lost an average of €16,000 each in reduced productivity and testing expenses. The corncrake (Crex crex), a shy and secretive bird, travels over 6,000 kilometres from the Congo basin to reach Ireland’s meadows and fields. Once a familiar sound of summer evenings, its distinctive "crex-crex" call has become a rare treat in recent decades.</p><p>That’s because the corncrake’s numbers have plummeted. Since 1978, the population has fallen by 85%, and the bird has vanished from 92% of its former breeding grounds. Back in the early 20th century, corncrakes were counted in their tens of thousands. By the mid-1990s, there were just 129 known individuals left in Ireland.</p><p>The culprit? These non-invasive tools allow experts to "listen" for the corncrake’s distinctive call and detect the birds’ body heat, even at night or in dense vegetation.</p><p>They’re also using devices like the SongMeter SM4 to capture the corncrake’s calls, and thermal drones to spot nesting females and their chicks. For a species already in sharp decline, even small disruptions can have serious consequences.</p><p>By switching to acoustic monitors and thermal imaging, conservationists can now gather data without stepping foot in sensitive breeding areas. These technologies allow experts to detect calls and heat signatures from a distance, dramatically reducing the risk of human interference.</p><p>The benefits are clear. Data collected using passive acoustic monitoring has helped pinpoint key breeding territories more accurately and quickly. In fact, a recent study found a 64% probability of detecting a corncrake at an occupied site during a night visit, highlighting the effectiveness of these methods . This not only increases the quality of research but also saves time and resources, allowing conservation teams to focus on protecting habitats rather than spending days manually surveying fields.</p><p>It's a prime example of how conservation can—and should—work hand in hand with sustainability. In 2024, Ireland recorded 233 corncrake territories—the highest number in 25 years. That’s a 7% increase on the previous year. Since 2018, territories have risen by 45% in key areas like Donegal, Mayo, and Galway.</p><p>The Corncrake LIFE project, launched in 2021, has seen bird numbers grow by 35%. They’re delaying mowing until later in the summer, allowing chicks time to fledge, and managing field edges and nettle patches where corncrakes love to hide.</p><p>Some are even adopting centre-out mowing techniques, which have been shown to reduce chick deaths by up to 60%. It may seem like a legal technicality happening on the other side of the world, but it speaks volumes about where environmental priorities are heading globally. And for those of us working in agriculture, sustainability, and rural policy, it raises some serious red flags.</p><p>What happens to environmental protections in countries like the US can shape the trajectory of global conservation for decades to come. At its core, the ESA makes it illegal to “harm” endangered species – and crucially, harm has long been interpreted to include the destruction of a species’ habitat.</p><p>This broader definition recognises that wildlife needs more than just legal protection – it needs functioning ecosystems to survive. A bird with no nesting site, a frog with no clean water, or a lynx with no hunting ground is effectively being harmed, even if it hasn’t been physically injured.</p><p>Under the proposed changes, however, harm would be redefined to exclude habitat degradation. That means companies could legally operate in areas critical to endangered species – mining, drilling, building – without violating the ESA, as long as no animals are directly harmed during the activity. It’s a dramatic shift in emphasis, one that separates species from the very environment that sustains them.</p><p>This isn’t just a paper change. It would have very real consequences for countless habitats, particularly in areas where industrial interests overlap with fragile ecosystems. When it rolls back protections, it sets a dangerous precedent. We’ve seen time and again that when one major economy deregulates, others can feel pressure to follow suit – particularly in the face of economic or political pressures.</p><p>Secondly, Ireland is facing its own biodiversity emergency. Over 60% of Ireland’s native species are in decline, and one-third are threatened with extinction. Habitat loss is at the core of this crisis – whether through land drainage, intensification of agriculture, or urban sprawl.</p><p>The curlew, for example, has declined by over 90% in the past 40 years in Ireland. The freshwater pearl mussel, a species once common in our rivers, now only survives in a few isolated catchments. From hedgerow restoration to creating biodiversity corridors, from protecting pollinators to planning low-impact grazing systems – we’ve seen the benefits of putting nature back at the centre of land management.</p><p>But these decisions are harder to make when policies are unclear, incentives are skewed, or regulations don’t reflect ecological realities. That’s why it matters so much how laws define terms like harm – because those definitions shape what’s legally acceptable and what’s not.</p><p>In agriculture especially, we’ve got a unique opportunity to be part of the solution. Well-managed farmland can provide refuge for wildlife, clean water, carbon storage, and food security – all at the same time. There’s mounting public opposition, legal resistance, and growing awareness of what’s at stake. But regardless of what happens in the US courts, the bigger message is clear: we can’t afford to take environmental protections for granted.</p><p>In Ireland, we’re at a crossroads too. With the new CAP strategic plan, increased focus on agri-environment schemes, and public interest in rewilding and nature restoration growing, we have a chance to do things differently. But that will only happen if we stay alert, stay informed, and keep biodiversity on the agenda – not just in our fields, but in our policies, our budgets, and our public debates.</p><p>Because in the end, protecting the natural world isn’t someone else’s job.
