<h3>Introduction</h3><p>One of the biggest challenges facing Irish agriculture today is not milk prices, environmental regulations, or international trade. It is the growing shortage of young people entering farming.</p><p>Across Ireland, the farming population is ageing rapidly, while fewer young people are taking over family farms or entering the industry for the first time. The average age of an Irish farm holder is now 59.4 years, while 37.8% of all farm holders are aged 65 or older. Should 10% of CAP Be Ring-Fenced for Young Farmers? Why the Debate Matters for Irish Agriculture

<h3>Introduction</h3><p>Irish agriculture has embraced innovation at an extraordinary pace. Modern tractors are more powerful, more efficient, and more technologically advanced than ever before. Precision farming technologies, GPS guidance systems, automated controls, and enhanced safety features have transformed how many farms operate.</p><p>Yet despite these advances, farming remains the most dangerous occupation in Ireland.</p><p>Year after year, agriculture records a disproportionate share of workplace fatalities. Although farming employs approximately 4% of Ireland’s workforce, it consistently accounts for a far greater proportion of workplace deaths. Farmers under the age of 35 account for just 4.3% of all farm holders.</p><p>This ageing demographic is reflected in farm fatality figures.</p><p>HSA data shows that between 2011 and 2020, 95 people aged over 65 lost their lives in farm incidents, accounting for 45% of all agricultural fatalities during that period.</p><p>The trend has continued in recent years. However, safety experts continue to warn that these protections are only effective when operators use them correctly. Although farming employs only a small proportion of Ireland’s workforce, it accounted for 23 workplace deaths in 2025, representing almost 40% of all occupational fatalities nationwide.</p><p>Between 2011 and 2020, 208 people lost their lives in agricultural work-related incidents, with vehicles involved in close to half of those deaths. The reality is that tractors and machinery remain the single biggest cause of fatal accidents on Irish farms.</p><p>The encouraging fact is that many of these incidents are preventable. Regular maintenance, proper training, risk assessment, appropriate use of safety equipment, and a culture that prioritises safety over speed can make a significant difference. Ensuring Tractor Safety: Reducing Farm Fatalities in Ireland

<h3>Introduction</h3><p>Invasive species are becoming one of the most serious environmental challenges facing Ireland and the scale of the problem is increasing rapidly.</p><p>From Japanese knotweed spreading along transport corridors to rhododendron overwhelming native woodland habitats, invasive species are now affecting agriculture, forestry, fisheries, biodiversity, tourism, construction, and public infrastructure across the country.</p><p>And while the environmental impact is significant, the financial cost is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.</p><p>In May 2026, the Government announced plans to establish a new national Invasive Species Bureau through a partnership between the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the National Biodiversity Data Centre. Originally introduced during the nineteenth century as an ornamental species, it has since spread extensively along roads, railways, riverbanks, development sites, and abandoned land.</p><p><br>The plant spreads aggressively through underground rhizomes, making eradication extremely difficult once established. Japanese knotweed rhizomes commonly extend:</p><ul><li>More than 1 metre underground.</li><li>An average vertical spread around 1.5 metres.</li><li>And in rare cases reaching up to 3 metres deep.</li></ul><p><br>The plant can also spread horizontally several metres beyond the visible growth area. For landowners and developers, the financial implications can be significant. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>Sheep farming remains one of the most recognisable parts of Irish agriculture. From the hills of Donegal and Mayo to the uplands of Wicklow, Kerry, and Galway, sheep farming has shaped rural Ireland for generations. In many parts of the country, particularly western and upland regions, it remains one of the few practical farming systems available.</p><p>But while the sector remains deeply important economically, socially, and environmentally, Irish sheep farming is also undergoing significant change. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>Irish agriculture remains one of the country’s biggest economic success stories. Food, drink, and horticulture exports reached approximately €19 billion in 2025, with Irish dairy and meat products sold across global markets.</p><p>But behind those headline export figures, another story is unfolding, one that receives far less attention. According to Teagasc, more than 90% of apples sold on the Irish market are imported. Teagasc has previously estimated there are around 200 commercial field vegetable growers nationally, while more recent evidence presented to the Oireachtas has suggested the number may now be closer to 60 large-scale commercial growers.</p><p>Teagasc also found that:</p><ul><li>The largest 50 growers account for approximately 75% of Ireland’s field.</li><li>Vegetable production area.</li></ul><p>In practical terms, a relatively small number of producers now supply a substantial proportion of vegetables entering Irish supermarkets. Ireland exported approximately 57,500 tonnes of mushrooms in 2024 which were worth around €174 million.The sector remains internationally competitive and export-focused, particularly into the UK market. </p><p>But over time, production has become concentrated into fewer, larger, highly specialised operations. CSO data shows there were 133,174 farms in Ireland in 2023<br>compared with over 139,000 farms in 2013. </p><p>Meanwhile, average farm size has continued to increase while the average age of Irish farmers is now approximately 59.4 years old. Smaller farms and growers often contribute to:</p><ul><li>Local food supply.</li><li>Biodiversity.</li><li>Shorter supply chains.</li><li>Rural employment.</li><li>And regional food production diversity.</li></ul><p><br>As production becomes more concentrated, Ireland risks becoming increasingly dependent on:</p><ul><li>Imported produce.</li><li>Fewer suppliers.</li><li>And longer international supply chains.</li></ul><p><br>That does not mean Irish agriculture is weakening overall. In many sectors, it remains highly successful internationally. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>Flooding in Ireland used to feel like a rare evenT, something that made the news every few years. That’s no longer the case, it’s becoming part of the backdrop to how we live, work, and manage land.</p><p>Recently, over €6.5 million was allocated to local authorities for interim flood protection, things like temporary barriers and drainage upgrades. It’s a welcome move, no question. Looking ahead, that could rise to 78,000 by 2100 under a mid-range climate scenario. Broaden that out, and up to 107,000 households could face moderate to high flood risk.</p><p>In some counties, Louth and Clare are often highlighted, more than 12% of homes could be exposed to high flood risk in the future.</p><p>Then there’s the coast. About 40% of Ireland’s population lives within 5km of it, which makes sense when you think about how our towns and cities developed. But it also means a large share of the population is exposed as sea levels rise. One estimate suggests that over 70,000 addresses could be at increased risk of coastal flooding by 2050.</p><p>Put simply, this isn’t a niche issue. The climate is shifting, and Ireland is feeling it.</p><p>We’re already about 7% wetter than we were in the late 20th century. That might not sound dramatic, but it matter because it’s not just more rain, it’s heavier bursts of it.</p><p>Recent research has shown that climate change has made certain storm rainfall events around 20% more intense. It doesn’t capture everything else; lost productivity, damaged infrastructure, or the knock-on effects for businesses and communities.</p><p>At the same time, large flood defence projects take years to move from planning to delivery. It shows up in very practical ways.</p><p>Land goes under water. Grazing windows shrink. Crops are lost. Soil takes a hit, not just in the moment, but over time. Nutrients get washed away, and what’s left behind often isn’t as productive.</p><p>One bad flood year can be absorbed. Increasingly, that thinking is shifting.</p><p>Now, there’s more focus on slowing water down, holding it where possible, and working with natural systems rather than against them.</p><p>That can mean:</p><ul><li>Improving soil structure so it absorbs more water.</li><li>Restoring wetlands that act like natural sponges.</li><li>Maintaining hedgerows and buffer zones that slow runoff.</li><li>Allowing floodplains to function as they’re supposed to.</li></ul><p><br>None of this replaces engineered flood defences, but it complements them. Because the reality is simple enough: we’re not going to eliminate flood risk entirely.
