Although farming employs only a small proportion of Ireland’s workforce, it accounted for 23 workplace deaths in 2025, representing almost 40% of all occupational fatalities nationwide.Between 2011 and 2020, 208 people lost their lives in agricultural work-related incidents, with vehicles involved in close to half of those deaths. The reality is that tractors and machinery remain the single biggest cause of fatal accidents on Irish farms.The encouraging fact is that many of these incidents are preventable. Regular maintenance, proper training, risk assessment, appropriate use of safety equipment, and a culture that prioritises safety over speed can make a significant difference. <h3>Introduction</h3>Invasive species are becoming one of the most serious environmental challenges facing Ireland and the scale of the problem is increasing rapidly.From Japanese knotweed spreading along transport corridors to rhododendron overwhelming native woodland habitats, invasive species are now affecting agriculture, forestry, fisheries, biodiversity, tourism, construction, and public infrastructure across the country.And while the environmental impact is significant, the financial cost is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.In May 2026, the Government announced plans to establish a new national Invasive Species Bureau through a partnership between the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the National Biodiversity Data Centre. Originally introduced during the nineteenth century as an ornamental species, it has since spread extensively along roads, railways, riverbanks, development sites, and abandoned land. The plant spreads aggressively through underground rhizomes, making eradication extremely difficult once established. Japanese knotweed rhizomes commonly extend:<ul><li>More than 1 metre underground.</li><li>An average vertical spread around 1.5 metres.</li><li>And in rare cases reaching up to 3 metres deep.</li></ul> The plant can also spread horizontally several metres beyond the visible growth area. For landowners and developers, the financial implications can be significant. <h3>Introduction</h3>Irish agriculture remains one of the country’s biggest economic success stories. Food, drink, and horticulture exports reached approximately €19 billion in 2025, with Irish dairy and meat products sold across global markets.But behind those headline export figures, another story is unfolding, one that receives far less attention. According to Teagasc, more than 90% of apples sold on the Irish market are imported. Teagasc has previously estimated there are around 200 commercial field vegetable growers nationally, while more recent evidence presented to the Oireachtas has suggested the number may now be closer to 60 large-scale commercial growers.Teagasc also found that:<ul><li>The largest 50 growers account for approximately 75% of Ireland’s field.</li><li>Vegetable production area.</li></ul>In practical terms, a relatively small number of producers now supply a substantial proportion of vegetables entering Irish supermarkets. Ireland exported approximately 57,500 tonnes of mushrooms in 2024 which were worth around €174 million.The sector remains internationally competitive and export-focused, particularly into the UK market. But over time, production has become concentrated into fewer, larger, highly specialised operations. Lidl stated that it spent approximately €1.3 billion with 400 Irish suppliers in 2024. while Tesco Ireland says it purchases around €1.6 billion worth of Irish food and drink annually. At Oireachtas agriculture committee hearings, grower representatives argued that fruit and vegetables are frequently used by retailers as highly competitive price-driven products to attract customers.Growers say that rising costs across:<ul><li>Labour.</li><li>Packaging.</li><li>Fertiliser.</li><li>Transport.</li><li>And energy have become increasingly difficult to absorb, particularly for smaller operations.</li></ul>Recent years have also exposed how vulnerable supply chains can become. CSO data shows there were 133,174 farms in Ireland in 2023 compared with over 139,000 farms in 2013. Meanwhile, average farm size has continued to increase while the average age of Irish farmers is now approximately 59.4 years old. In many sectors, it remains highly successful internationally.
