When prices start to soften at the checkout, it usually means someone further up the chain has taken the hit, and it’s rarely the retailer.</p><p>Yes, shoppers are beginning to get a small breather (if even), and yes, grocery sales still grew 5.5% over the past 12 weeks. But that rise comes from people spending more, not buying more. Farmers know that story all too well: higher turnover doesn’t mean healthier margins.</p><p>Meanwhile, nothing about the day-to-day costs of running a farm has fallen in any meaningful way. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>There’s been a noticeable shift in Irish food habits over the past few years, and farmers are in the middle of it whether they realise it or not. People are getting tired of food that feels like it’s travelled further than they ever will. They want to know who they’re buying from. They want to support local families, not vague-sounding companies. And they’re willing to pay for that connection.</p><p>When you look at the bigger picture, this makes perfect sense. It’s a simple equation: people trust the farmer more than the middleman. They want to know where their food came from and whether it was produced responsibly.</p><p>And here’s the thing: Irish farmers already have what consumers want. One report put it at just 0.4% involved in on-farm food processing or selling their own produce. Hardly a crowded market.</p><p>But that’s changing.</p><p>Take Rostellan Farm in Cork. A family dairy farm that didn’t just stick to selling into the traditional system, they built a farm shop, started selling milk and produce directly, and turned the place into a real community hub. They’re proof that customers respond when they can put a face and a place to the food they’re buying.</p><p>Or the case of Brian and Cency McLeer in Co. Louth. After seeing a milk vending machine abroad, they brought the idea home and set one up on their own farm. But that view is fast changing. Across Ireland, more farmers are realising that these little flying machines can do far more than take nice pictures. The savings, especially for larger farms, can repay that in a season or two through reduced inputs and more efficient management.</p><p>Under TAMS 3, drones themselves aren’t directly grant-aided, but precision-farming equipment, like GPS spreaders and nutrient-mapping tools, qualify for up to 60% funding. Two commercial turkey farms, one in Carlow and another in Meath, have now confirmed cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1). It’s unwelcome news, especially heading into winter, and it has triggered a nationwide housing order for all poultry and captive birds.</p><p>For most farmers, this feels familiar. Anyone who went through the 2021–2022 wave knows how disruptive even a handful of cases can be. Backyard keepers sometimes assume these rules don’t apply to them, they do.</p><p>In practice, you now need to:</p><ul><li>House birds indoors or under a fully covered run.</li><li>Keep feed, water, and bedding protected from wild birds.</li><li>Use footbaths at entry points.</li><li>Keep equipment and personnel movements to a minimum.</li><li>Maintain solid rodent control.</li><li>Separate waterfowl from other poultry entirely.</li></ul><p>Larger flocks (350 birds or more) have extra requirements around shed zoning, vehicle control and equipment management. Agriculture is still Ireland’s single largest emitter. Total emissions fell 4.6% in 2023, mainly due to reduced fertiliser use and more liming, a good step, but far from enough. It’s a joint effort by Teagasc, ICBF, and UCD, and it’s finding practical ways to cut emissions at source. Early results show that smarter breeding and improved feed efficiency could reduce methane output by up to 10% nationally, without denting productivity.</p><p>On the energy front, the Solar Capital Investment Scheme under TAMS offers up to 60% grant aid for rooftop panels, and microgeneration payments now let farmers sell excess power back to the grid. It’s not just about green credentials, it’s about trimming costs long-term.</p><p>Meanwhile, Europe’s planned carbon border adjustment mechanism (a tariff on high-emission imports) could play to Ireland’s advantage. Our grass-fed beef and dairy may soon carry more export weight simply because they’re produced more cleanly than the global average.</p><p>That said, finance remains the sticking point. The average family farm income in 2023 was just €43,000, and many beef and sheep farms earned far less. Major upgrades or new tech aren’t realistic for every farmer. If climate policy is to work, supports must be tiered, with grants, credit lines, and advisory help aimed squarely at smaller, lower-income farms. That’s not a surprise. The next competitive edge will come from data confidence, being able to show, with facts, what’s happening on your farm and why.</p><p>That doesn’t mean fitting Wi-Fi to every gatepost. Start with something small that genuinely helps, see how it goes, and build from there.</p><p>The best technology in farming isn’t loud or flashy. It’s the stuff you hardly notice because it’s doing its job quietly in the background, saving time, reducing waste, and letting you focus on the real work.</p><p>So yes, go digital, but keep your feet on the ground. Use common sense, mind the budget, and don’t let anyone convince you that more gadgets equal more progress. The smartest farms aren’t the most high-tech ones.
