<h3>Intorduction</h3>The Netherlands has announced one of the most significant agricultural policy reforms seen in Europe in recent years.As part of a new national strategy to reduce nitrogen pollution, improve water quality and restore protected habitats, the Dutch Government plans to introduce a maximum stocking rate of 2.6 livestock units (LU) per hectare for dairy farms by 2035. Around 54% of this agricultural land is permanent grassland, while a further 11% is used for green fodder crops.The Netherlands also has the highest livestock density in the European Union, with 3.4 livestock units per hectare, compared with the EU average of 0.7 livestock units per hectare.This remarkable level of productivity has helped make the Netherlands one of the world's leading agricultural exporters. <h3>Introduction</h3>Irish agriculture has embraced innovation at an extraordinary pace. Modern tractors are more powerful, more efficient, and more technologically advanced than ever before. Precision farming technologies, GPS guidance systems, automated controls, and enhanced safety features have transformed how many farms operate.Yet despite these advances, farming remains the most dangerous occupation in Ireland.Year after year, agriculture records a disproportionate share of workplace fatalities. Although farming employs approximately 4% of Ireland’s workforce, it consistently accounts for a far greater proportion of workplace deaths. Farmers under the age of 35 account for just 4.3% of all farm holders.This ageing demographic is reflected in farm fatality figures.HSA data shows that between 2011 and 2020, 95 people aged over 65 lost their lives in farm incidents, accounting for 45% of all agricultural fatalities during that period.The trend has continued in recent years. However, safety experts continue to warn that these protections are only effective when operators use them correctly. This represented a decline of 77,200 sheep (-1.5%) compared with 2024. The number of breeding sheep also declined by: 2.7% year-on-year. Large areas of; upland pasture, commonage, and semi-natural grassland are actively maintained through sheep grazing.Without grazing activity, many of these landscapes would gradually:<ul><li>Scrub over.</li><li>Lose open habitat structure.</li><li>And undergo major ecological change.</li></ul>At the same time, environmental concerns remain part of the discussion around the sector. Issues including:<ul><li>Overgrazing.</li><li>Biodiversity protection.</li><li>Peatland management.</li><li>And agricultural emissions.</li></ul>These have all become increasingly important within agricultural policy debates. According to the CSO the average age of Irish farmers is now approximately 59.4 years old.
