<h3>Introduction</h3><p>When the Government launched its new Circular Economy Strategy for 2026–2028, one figure quietly did most of the talking.</p><p>Ireland’s Circularity Metric currently stands at 2.7%. That means more than 97% of the materials moving through our economy are still coming from virgin sources. But in material terms, that shift would represent a significant structural change in how products are designed, how waste is treated, and how businesses operate.</p><p>It isn’t about recycling more bottles. Under EU rules, Member States must achieve 90% separate collection of plastic beverage bottles by 2029.</p><p>The scale of the container stream makes it one of the most visible examples of linear consumption in action. Thinner materials. Refillable systems. Reusable formats. Fewer layers.</p><p>Packaging waste is not accidental, it is designed in. Too often, repairing something costs almost as much as replacing it. If the numbers don’t stack up, consumers choose new.</p><p>A voucher scheme narrows that gap and repair work is local by nature. It supports small businesses, keeps skills alive in towns and prevents useful materials from becoming waste prematurely.</p><p>Circularity isn’t always high-tech. Manufacturers will need to think differently about lifespan. Consumers will have more information. That’s not symbolic.</p><p>Ireland has committed to reducing food waste by 50% by 2030, in line with international targets. That affects supply chains from farm to fork.</p><p>Circularity in agriculture isn’t just about waste reduction. Reaching 12% by 2030 means rethinking procurement, redesigning products, revaluing waste streams and changing consumer behaviour.</p><p>That won’t happen overnight. It won’t happen evenly. It isn’t.</p><p>It’s about where materials come from, how long they last, and whether we treat waste as an endpoint or as a resource.</p><p>Right now, more than 97% of Ireland’s material use remains linear. That’s the reality. <h3>Introduction&nbsp;</h3><p>The recent focus on hedgehog conservation has struck a chord with people, and not just because it’s a species everyone recognises.</p><p>For those of us working in agriculture, sustainability and land management, it’s hard to miss the bigger message behind it. When a common, adaptable animal starts disappearing from a landscape as green and farmed as Ireland, it tells us something important about how that landscape is functioning.</p><p>We don’t yet have a single definitive population figure for hedgehogs in Ireland but we do know they are in decline, and we know why: loss of habitat, less connected countryside, and reduced food availability. That’s a functioning agricultural landscape.</p><p>Because the same features also support pollination, natural pest control, water regulation and soil health. Take pollinators as one example. In Ireland:</p><ul><li>30 of our 99 wild bee species are at risk of extinction.</li><li>insect pollination is worth up to €59 million per year to Irish food production.</li><li>That’s not an environmental add-on,&nbsp; that’s a production input we don’t have to pay for when the system is working.</li></ul><p>Birds tell a similar story:</p><ul><li>Twenty-six per cent of Ireland’s regularly occurring bird species are now on the Red List and 37% on the Amber List.</li><li>Overall, 63% are now considered of conservation concern.</li></ul><p>Again, these are not abstract losses. In reality, it’s becoming an asset, and a measurable one.</p><p>Ireland’s biodiversity is estimated to deliver around €2.6 billion per year in ecosystem services. They are the same measures that come up again and again in good farm planning:</p><p><strong>Managing hedgerows for structure rather than appearance:</strong><br></p><ul><li>Cutting on rotation and allowing flowering and fruiting makes them useful as habitat while still doing their job for stock and shelter.</li></ul><p><strong>Keeping and managing field margins:</strong><br></p><ul><li>These areas protect water, support insects and create movement corridors across the farm.</li></ul><p><strong>Reducing chemical pressure where it makes sense:</strong></p><ul><li>Not as an ideology, but as a way of supporting soil biology and the wider food web that production ultimately depends on.</li></ul><p><strong>Improving connectivity:</strong><br></p><ul><li>Because in a fragmented landscape, even small changes in permeability make a real difference.</li></ul><p>None of this takes land out of farming. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>For years now, seaweed has been talked about as the next big thing for Ireland’s coastal economy. On paper, the case is hard to argue with. We’re an island with roughly 7,500 km of coastline, sitting beside clean Atlantic water, while the global market for seaweed products is expected to be worth around €22 billion by 2028.</p><p>That sounds like the kind of opportunity countries build whole sectors around. And yet, when you look at the reality on the ground, the Irish industry is still tiny, worth about €495,000, producing just 496 tonnes of biomass. That gap between potential and reality is what’s driving the current tension. The argument isn’t really about seaweed. Technically, that’s true. In reality, it’s about something deeper, control, access and where the value ends up.</p><p>For people who have been harvesting seaweed along the same stretches of coast for generations, this isn’t an abstract policy debate. It’s about whether an industry that has always been small-scale and local is about to become something very different.</p><p>Once large licences enter the picture, the balance shifts. That’s not unique to seaweed, we’ve seen the same thing in forestry, in fishing, and in parts of agriculture. It isn’t. If it develops properly, it can create year-round marine employment in places where work is often seasonal. It can supply inputs into Irish agriculture, particularly in the area of soil health and reducing reliance on synthetic products. It can anchor processing activity in coastal regions that have been losing traditional industries for years.</p><p>That’s why the structure of the industry matters so much at this early stage. It brings scale. It justifies investment in processing and product development. Without it, you’re supplying raw material in small volumes and watching the higher-value activity happen somewhere else.</p><p>The national strategy already acknowledges this, hatcheries, native species development, a clearer licensing pathway for farms. Ireland’s Seaweed Industry at a Crossroads — Opportunity, Ownership and Coastal Livelihoods

<h3>Introduction</h3><p>When news broke of the massive fish kill on the Munster Blackwater, it hit hard across angling circles, rural communities and the wider agri-food sector. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>When news broke that the EU had backed Denmark’s €1.04 billion plan to take land out of production, it raised a few eyebrows here. Not panic, but definitely interest because once something like that gets approved in one EU country, people naturally wonder what direction policy is drifting in. </p><p>Denmark isn’t Ireland. It’s not compulsory. No one is being marched off their farm. But the offer is there, real money in exchange for permanent land change.</p><p>The total package is €1.04 billion. That’s not a token scheme, that’s a serious financial commitment.</p><p>The backdrop is climate policy. Agriculture is understood to account for about a third of Denmark’s national emissions, so the Danish government is looking at land use as one of the fastest ways to shift the dial.</p><p>You don’t need to agree with it to understand the logic. If land use contributes heavily to emissions, change the land use. A lot of farmers are thinking about succession, retirement, or what the next ten years look like. Not everyone has someone ready to step in.</p><p>If you’re nearing the end of your farming career and feeling squeezed by regulation, costs and compliance, a properly funded voluntary exit might look like a dignified way to step away.</p><p>There’s also the argument that this approach is more honest than endless regulation. Instead of tightening rules until production falls anyway, Denmark is effectively saying: if we need less production in certain areas, we’ll pay for it. It reduces output, that matters.</p><p>Ireland exported €18.1 billion worth of agri-food products last year. That’s not small change, it underpins rural economies, processing jobs and trade relationships. The agri-food sector here supports almost 160,000 jobs. That’s farmers, processors, hauliers, feed merchants, vets, contractors, the whole chain.</p><p>If land leaves production permanently, the ripple doesn’t stop at the gate.</p><p>There’s also the bigger question of displacement. If Denmark produces less food, global demand doesn’t vanish, it moves somewhere else. Possibly somewhere with lower environmental standards. Family farms dominate, production structures differ, what makes sense in one country doesn’t automatically transfer to another. </p><p>But EU policy thinking does move in waves, once a model is tested in one member state, it enters the wider conversation, and if EU funding increasingly rewards environmental outcomes over production, that changes the tone of agricultural policy across the board.</p><p>We’re already seeing that shift through CAP reforms and eco-schemes. That sounds simple, even comforting, but it also means responsibility is concentrated.</p><p>One person is often carrying:</p><ul><li>The financial risk.</li><li>The compliance pressure.</li><li>The animal health decisions.</li><li>The long-term planning.</li><li>The worry about what happens next.<br></li></ul><p>There’s no management structure to spread that load. No one to hand things off to when you’re tired.</p><p>That reality showed up clearly in the DCU National Study on Burnout and Sleep Among Irish Farmers, which surveyed 351 farmers across the country. The results were hard to ignore:</p><ul><li>23.6% reported frequent burnout.</li><li>50.1% reported widespread sleep problems.<br></li></ul><p>Poor sleep isn’t just about feeling tired. It chips away at patience, judgement and resilience. From the outside, things can look steady.</p><p>But the Irish Research on Work–Family Conflict and Mental Health in Farming showed strong links between farming pressures and poorer mental health, including anxiety and depression. Farming rarely respects the boundary between work and home. It’s not something that happens “somewhere else”.</p><p>Further context comes from the National Analysis of Probable Suicide by Occupation (2015–2018), which showed that male farmers accounted for about 8% of all male probable suicides in Ireland, with older farmers particularly affected.</p><p>These figures don’t mean farming causes suicide. In farming, that fatigue is made worse by uncertainty around weather, prices and policy, all of which sit outside the farmer’s control.</p><p>It’s not about coping badly. Many farmers spend long stretches of the day alone, especially outside peak seasons.</p><p>Mental health research consistently links isolation with increased anxiety and depression. When worries stay in your own head, because there’s no obvious space to say them out loud, they grow.</p><p>This isn’t about loneliness in the social sense. Advisors understand farming pressure because they see it every day, the weather stress, the cost stress, the timing stress.</p><p>National services through the HSE provide access to counselling and mental health supports, while Samaritans offer confidential, 24-hour support for anyone who needs to talk.</p><p>Reaching out isn’t an admission that you can’t cope. It takes constant judgement, emotional resilience and the ability to carry uncertainty day after day.</p><p>The figures show that burnout, sleep disruption and elevated mental health risks exist within the farming community. Support exists too.</p><p>Looking after Irish agriculture means looking after the people who keep it going.
