<h3>Introduction</h3><p>Recent research supported by the UK’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) is shedding new light on one of nature’s most intriguing phenomena: the extraordinary lifespan and fertility of queen bees.</p><p>Bees are best known for their role in pollination, biodiversity, and food production, but their significance extends beyond agriculture. Increasingly, scientists are turning their attention to bees for insights into human health—specifically, what these small but complex creatures might reveal about ageing and fertility.</p><p>Central to this emerging area of research is the queen bee. Despite sharing almost identical genetics with the worker bees in her colony, the queen lives significantly longer and remains fertile for the entirety of her life. Genetically, they are almost identical. Yet, their lives diverge dramatically. The queen can live between three to five years, while worker bees typically survive only six to seven weeks during the summer. Winter workers live a little longer, up to around five months, as their workload decreases.</p><p>In terms of fertility, the differences are even more pronounced. The queen bee lays between 1,500 to 2,000 eggs per dayduring peak season, while worker bees are sterile under normal conditions. All larvae are initially fed royal jelly, a thick, protein-rich secretion produced by nurse bees. However, only those destined to become queens are fed royal jelly continuously.</p><p>This exclusive diet activates specific developmental pathways. Queens develop functioning ovaries, grow larger bodies, and gain enhanced immunity and longevity. Research suggests that compounds in royal jelly trigger epigenetic changes—modifications in gene expression without altering the DNA sequence itself.</p><p>In simple terms, royal jelly doesn’t change the blueprint—it changes how the blueprint is read and used. In winter, when activity slows and bees cluster to maintain warmth, workers can live up to 150–200 days. According to some estimates, one in ten wild bee species in Europe is currently facing extinction.</p><p>This makes continued bee research not only valuable but urgent. <h3>Introduction&nbsp;</h3><p>There’s exciting news out of Carlow this month, where plans have been unveiled for what will become Ireland’s largest biogas plant. This ambitious project is more than just another energy development — it represents a real shift in how we think about waste, farming, and our national approach to sustainability.</p><p>Once built, the facility will process vast amounts of organic material — everything from agricultural slurry to food waste — and convert it into renewable biogas. The result is a methane-rich gas that can be used to generate energy, along with a nutrient-rich by-product called digestate.</p><p>But it’s not just about energy production. Biogas ticks several critical boxes:</p><p>It tackles emissions at the source. Methane is over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide in the short term. By capturing it from waste that would otherwise release it into the atmosphere, we’re making a real dent in agricultural emissions.<br>It supports energy independence. Biogas is produced year-round using local materials — reducing reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets.<br>It gives waste a second life. Ireland generates over one million tonnes of food waste each year. Instead of sending it to landfill, we can turn it into something useful.<br>It feeds the soil, not just the grid. Digestate, the by-product of biogas production, can be used on farms as a natural fertiliser. It’s lower in odour, safer for water quality, and kinder to the land than untreated slurry.<br>At present, less than 1% of Ireland’s gas supply comes from renewable sources. Compare that with Denmark, where over 20% of the gas grid is fed by biomethane, and it’s clear we’ve some catching up to do. The good news? As mentioned, in Denmark, more than a quarter of manure is processed through AD plants, and farm incomes are often stabilised through these partnerships. The research suggests that we may not fully understand just how deeply climate change could affect our economies. While it certainly raises alarm bells, it’s also an opportunity for discussion and reflection. We need to ask ourselves how prepared we truly are for the financial consequences of a warming world, and how much we need to adjust our current models to better reflect these future risks.</p><p>This study is not a final answer, but rather an invitation to re-evaluate the economic assumptions we have made up until now. These are not just numbers; they represent real impacts on livelihoods, businesses, and entire economies.</p><p>In fact, we are already experiencing the early effects of climate change. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the global temperature has already risen by about 1.2°C. If current emissions continue, we could see a rise of 4°C by the end of the century, which would have a catastrophic effect on the global economy. The World Bank estimates that climate change could push as many as 100 million people into extreme poverty by 2030 due to reduced crop yields and higher food prices. For example, staple crops like wheat and rice are expected to face significant yield reductions by mid-century, with some regions losing up to 25% of their crop production by 2050.</p><p>At the same time, higher temperatures and more extreme weather events are likely to disrupt essential supply chains, from raw materials to finished goods. This could increase prices, cause shortages, and limit access to vital resources, hitting poorer nations especially hard. According to the National Academy of Sciences, each degree of global warming could result in a 2.8% loss in global GDP. The Economic Impact of Climate Change: A Call for Urgent Action

<h3>Introduction</h3><p>Not too long ago, it felt like the sky was the limit for Irish dairy. When EU milk quotas were scrapped in 2015, it sparked a wave of optimism across the country. Farmers who’d been held back by decades of restrictions were finally free to expand, and many didn’t hesitate.</p><p>Milk flowed, herds grew, and the industry surged ahead. Between 2015 and 2020, milk output shot up by over 40%, and Ireland’s dairy herd climbed from around 1.2 million cows in 2010 to over 1.6 million in 2022. Exports boomed too, hitting €6.3 billion in 2022, with Irish butter and cheese reaching tables as far afield as China, Africa and the Middle East.</p><p>But fast-forward to today, and things are starting to shift. Climate targets, environmental rules, rising costs, and an evolving market have all conspired to change the direction of travel.</p><p>Farming is still the backbone of rural Ireland, but it’s under more scrutiny than ever. Agriculture is responsible for around 37.5% of Ireland’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Within that, the dairy sector contributes roughly 21%, mostly from methane and fertilisers. From 2024, Ireland’s nitrates derogation dropped from 250 kg N/ha to 220 kg N/ha in many parts of the country. For around 3,000 affected farmers— particularly those in the Golden Vale and other high-stocked regions — this has created a serious headache.</p><p>Some are being forced to cut cow numbers. Others are scrambling to lease extra land. All of them are trying to balance compliance with the day-to-day reality of running a viable business.</p><p>And it’s not happening in a vacuum. Input costs — especially fertiliser — have been volatile, peaking at €1,200 per tonne in 2022. By expanding into international markets and developing value-added products, such as specialty cheeses and dairy-based nutritional products, Irish dairying can maintain its competitive edge.</p><p>Collaborations with food scientists and innovation centers are aiding in the development of unique dairy products that cater to changing consumer preferences. Over 90% of Ireland’s dairy output is exported, making us highly exposed to global politics and market shifts. In recent years, we’ve seen just how vulnerable that makes us.</p><p>During Donald Trump’s presidency, the US imposed stiff tariffs — up to 25% — on a range of EU agri-food products, including iconic Irish dairy items like butter and cheddar. The move, linked to a wider dispute over aircraft subsidies, hit Irish exporters hard. Some were forced to pull back; others took the financial hit just to keep their place in the market.</p><p>Although many of those tariffs were eased under President Biden, the lesson was clear: global politics can shake things at farm level, and fast. With Trump once again running for office, there’s real concern that a second term could bring renewed tariffs or other trade disruptions.</p><p>Beyond the US, competition is heating up globally. Demand from China — once a key driver of global dairy prices — has cooled. Buyers in Europe are placing more weight on carbon footprints, animal welfare, and traceability. And new players are entering the market, often with lower production costs.</p><p>In short: quality isn’t enough anymore. Technology is starting to make a real difference — from precision grazing systems and real-time herd monitoring, to soil testing and low-emission slurry spreading (LESS).</p><p>The uptake of LESS has been particularly encouraging — used on over 70% of farms now, up from just 20% in 2016. It’s reducing ammonia loss, improving nutrient efficiency, and helping farmers stay within regulatory limits.</p><p>Selective breeding is also proving its worth. By choosing cows with better feed efficiency and lower methane output, farmers are seeing productivity gains of 5–10% per animal.
