<h3>Introduction</h3><p>When the Trump administration in the United States proposed narrowing the definition of “harm” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), it didn’t make the front page over here in Ireland – but it probably should have. It may seem like a legal technicality happening on the other side of the world, but it speaks volumes about where environmental priorities are heading globally. And for those of us working in agriculture, sustainability, and rural policy, it raises some serious red flags.</p><p>What happens to environmental protections in countries like the US can shape the trajectory of global conservation for decades to come. At its core, the ESA makes it illegal to “harm” endangered species – and crucially, harm has long been interpreted to include the destruction of a species’ habitat.</p><p>This broader definition recognises that wildlife needs more than just legal protection – it needs functioning ecosystems to survive. A bird with no nesting site, a frog with no clean water, or a lynx with no hunting ground is effectively being harmed, even if it hasn’t been physically injured.</p><p>Under the proposed changes, however, harm would be redefined to exclude habitat degradation. That means companies could legally operate in areas critical to endangered species – mining, drilling, building – without violating the ESA, as long as no animals are directly harmed during the activity. It’s a dramatic shift in emphasis, one that separates species from the very environment that sustains them.</p><p>This isn’t just a paper change. It would have very real consequences for countless habitats, particularly in areas where industrial interests overlap with fragile ecosystems. We’ve seen time and again that when one major economy deregulates, others can feel pressure to follow suit – particularly in the face of economic or political pressures.</p><p>Secondly, Ireland is facing its own biodiversity emergency. Over 60% of Ireland’s native species are in decline, and one-third are threatened with extinction. Habitat loss is at the core of this crisis – whether through land drainage, intensification of agriculture, or urban sprawl.</p><p>The curlew, for example, has declined by over 90% in the past 40 years in Ireland. The freshwater pearl mussel, a species once common in our rivers, now only survives in a few isolated catchments. Farmers in California, many of whom depend on exporting a significant portion of their produce, suddenly found themselves locked out of one of their largest and most profitable markets.</p><p>The knock-on effect has been significant. With buyers drying up and prices dropping, producers have faced financial losses running into the billions. For many, the uncertainty is the most difficult part. Agricultural planning isn’t something that can be done on the fly—decisions about what to plant or raise often have to be made a year or more in advance. California has been hit hard by extreme weather—record-breaking heatwaves, prolonged droughts, and destructive wildfires are now regular occurrences, leaving farmers increasingly vulnerable.</p><p>Between 2020 and 2022, much of the state experienced extreme drought, and in 2021 alone, wildfires burned over 2.6 million acres. These events disrupt planting, damage crops and infrastructure, and put enormous strain on already stretched rural communities.</p><p>Water scarcity is perhaps the most urgent concern. California’s farms rely on a complex network of rivers, reservoirs, and aquifers for irrigation. But in recent years, water deliveries from major sources like the State Water Project have plummeted. In some cases, farmers received just 5% of their usual water allocation, pushing many to rely on dwindling groundwater supplies—an unsustainable stopgap.</p><p>In the Imperial Valley, where annual rainfall barely reaches three inches, the Colorado River is essential. Yet its reservoirs are at record lows. As water becomes scarcer and urban demand grows, farmers are forced to cut back production, switch to more drought-tolerant crops, or let land go unused. This comes at a time when farmers desperately need innovation—new crop varieties, pest management tools, and climate adaptation strategies—to stay afloat in an increasingly unpredictable environment.</p><p>Labour is another major pressure point. California’s farming industry depends heavily on migrant and seasonal workers, who make up around 50–70% of the agricultural workforce. Yet tighter immigration policies and reduced access to temporary work visas have left farms chronically understaffed. In some seasons, it’s estimated that tens of thousands of farm jobs have gone unfilled across the state, leading to lower yields and, in some cases, entire crops being left unharvested.</p><p>The wine industry offers a sharp example of the sector’s fragility. In 2020, wildfires burned through large swathes of vineyard land, and smoke damage rendered vast quantities of grapes unsuitable for production. The losses ran into the billions, and for smaller vineyards, the impact was devastating. Others are focusing on local and domestic markets to avoid the unpredictability of export trade. But for many—particularly smaller, family-run farms—there’s little margin for experimentation. Rising input costs, reduced water access, and labour shortages mean that even small setbacks can push a farm to the brink.</p><p>California has lost over a million acres of farmland in the last two decades, with many farmers citing economic and environmental pressures as the main reason for exiting the industry. This isn’t just a story of business decline—it’s one of disappearing rural communities, generational livelihoods at risk, and a question mark over the future of food production in one of the most fertile regions on earth.</p><p>At its core, this is about resilience—not just of crops, but of people, places, and systems. For many living in draughty, oil-heated houses across the countryside, this could be a lifeline. Better-insulated homes don’t just reduce energy bills — they improve health, comfort and long-term quality of life.</p><p>However, there’s a practical challenge here. While the funding is welcome, retrofitting requires skilled tradespeople — and Ireland is currently facing shortages in this area. Without a parallel investment in training and workforce capacity, the rollout risks being slower than anticipated.</p><p><strong>2. Boosting Electric Vehicle Infrastructure</strong></p><p>Another key area of focus is transport. The Plan includes the installation of 170 high-powered EV charging stations around the country. This is timely, given that Ireland now has nearly 110,000 electric vehicles on the road — a little over halfway to the 2025 target.</p><p>But one of the most persistent criticisms of the EV rollout to date is that rural areas have been left behind. If you live in a village or a farming community, you may still struggle to find a reliable charging point within a reasonable distance. For people whose livelihoods depend on travel — from farm deliveries to rural healthcare — that’s a real barrier to switching to electric.</p><p>If the new charging points are well-placed and well-maintained, they could help close that rural-urban divide. But again, it all comes down to delivery. Are we building infrastructure fast enough to match the growing number of EVs on the road?</p><p><strong>3. Cleaner Power: Wind, Oil and What Comes Next</strong></p><p>Ireland has always had huge potential when it comes to renewable energy — particularly offshore wind. The Plan takes this further with a third offshore wind auction, opening up new opportunities to harness clean power at scale. This is a positive move, especially if local communities are meaningfully included in the development process.</p><p>Meanwhile, the coal-fired power station at Moneypoint in County Clare is being converted to run on oil and many are questioning why we’re not moving straight to renewable alternatives. Is this a stepping stone — or a delay tactic?</p><p><strong>4. Tackling the Planning Gridlock</strong></p><p>One of the less headline-grabbing, but perhaps most critical elements of the Plan is the push to reform Ireland’s planning system. Delays in getting permissions for wind farms, solar arrays, and even energy-efficient homes have long held back progress.</p><p>Developers and local authorities alike have cited the system as overly slow and complex. The Plan promises to streamline this, which could unlock a lot of stuck projects. But here too, care is needed. These homes tend to have poor insulation and lower energy efficiency ratings, making them more expensive to heat – especially during long, cold winters.</p><p>Retrofitting these homes isn't just about hitting climate targets. It's also about improving quality of life, cutting down on household energy bills, and reducing exposure to fuel poverty. For many rural families, these upgrades could make homes more comfortable, healthier, and more resilient in the face of rising energy costs.</p><p><strong>Opportunities in Renewable Energy</strong></p><p>Farmers and landowners are increasingly being presented with opportunities to participate in Ireland’s green energy transition. A new support scheme for small-scale renewable electricity projects allows farms to generate wind or solar power at a local level and earn a guaranteed income over 15 years.</p><p>Depending on the project size, this could be a significant and stable revenue stream – all while helping the country move towards its renewable energy targets. There’s also growing interest in ‘agrivoltaics’, which involves combining farming with solar energy production on the same land. This approach can increase land use efficiency and allow farmers to continue grazing livestock or growing crops alongside generating clean electricity.</p><p>With the right advice and support, these options could provide rural families with sustainable ways to diversify their income and future-proof their land use.</p><p><strong>Early Steps Towards Electrification</strong></p><p>Although electric tractors and farm machinery are still in the early stages of development, the groundwork is already being laid. The expansion of EV charging infrastructure across the country will help make the transition to electric vehicles more viable for rural households.</p><p>Even having reliable access to a charging point can make a big difference for families considering a switch to electric cars or vans. Under current policies alone, the projected reduction could be as low as 11%.</p><p>These figures suggest Ireland is likely to overshoot its first two carbon budgets (2021–2025 and 2026–2030) by between 17% and 27%. That’s not a small gap — and it raises serious concerns about the scale and urgency of action required in the years ahead.</p><p><strong>The Agriculture Dilemma</strong></p><p>Agriculture remains Ireland’s largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for just under 38% of the national total in 2023. While there was a 4.6% drop in emissions last year — helped by a notable 18% reduction in nitrogen fertiliser use — the bigger, more structural shifts needed are still lacking.</p><p>Without further intervention, projections suggest that agricultural emissions may only fall by between 1% and 18% by the end of the decade. Measures such as greater uptake of protected urea fertilisers, methane-reducing feed additives, improved manure management, and shorter animal finishing times could all help — but these changes remain politically and practically challenging. Conversations around herd size, land use change, and diversification continue to be sensitive topics that are yet to be tackled head-on.</p><p><strong>The Cost of Inaction</strong></p><p>Failing to meet Ireland’s climate targets could carry a significant price tag. Estimates suggest the country may face financial penalties ranging from €8 billion to €26 billion if it fails to stay within its carbon budgets. These costs would arise from having to purchase surplus emissions allowances from other EU countries and could equate to between 3% and 9% of national income.</p><p>This isn’t just a case of missed environmental targets — it’s a risk to economic stability and future public spending. People are budgeting more carefully, weighing up value for money, and increasingly taking advantage of promotions and special offers, which now account for 23% of total grocery spending—up from 19% in 2024.</p><p>In other words, the promotional aisle isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s becoming a key part of how people shop.</p><p>We’re also seeing a steady shift towards own-label products—the supermarket’s own versions of everything from pasta to yoghurt. These ranges are no longer seen as the ‘cheap’ option. In fact, many have improved in quality and are marketed with sustainability in mind. Sales of own-label items have jumped by 4.5% and now make up 47.6% of all value sales.</p><p>That said, brand loyalty is holding strong too. Branded products have grown at exactly the same rate—also up 4.5%—with a market share of 47%. International politics, particularly trade relations with the United States, could soon have very real consequences for Irish producers and, ultimately, for consumers.</p><p>With Donald Trump now back in the White House, early signals suggest that a return to protectionist trade policy is firmly on the agenda. One of the key proposals currently under discussion is the introduction of tariffs on EU imports, with rates potentially ranging between 10% and 20%. While these are framed as measures to support American industries, the knock-on effects could hit Ireland’s agri-food sector hard.</p><p>The United States is one of Ireland’s most valuable agri-food export markets outside the EU. In 2024, Irish whiskey exports topped €1 billion, with around 40% of that going to the US. Irish butter has also become increasingly popular with American consumers, with exports rising by over 10% in a single year. These figures represent not just strong trade relationships, but also thousands of Irish jobs and rural livelihoods tied to their success.</p><p>When these proposed tariffs are fully implemented, it’s likely that Irish goods will become less competitive in the American market, simply due to the added cost. That could result in reduced demand, slower exports, and producers facing the challenge of finding alternative markets at short notice.</p><p>The impact doesn’t stop at the border. If EU producers as a whole begin to face barriers selling into the US, many will turn their focus back to the European market—including Ireland. That could lead to an oversupply in certain product categories, which in turn would drive down prices. For Irish producers already grappling with rising input costs, this would make already tight margins even tighter.</p><p>And those input costs are worth a mention on their own. Irish farms are deeply integrated with global supply chains when it comes to essentials like animal feed, fertilisers, fuel, and packaging. Between 2021 and 2023, input costs for Irish farms increased by around 27%, driven mainly by global price fluctuations in energy and fertiliser. If international trade tensions rise, those costs could climb further—making it more expensive to produce food here at home.</p><p>It’s a clear reminder that global politics are anything but abstract. Decisions made in Washington can directly affect the cost of producing a litre of milk in Mayo or a packet of cheese in Meath.</p><p>For those working across the agri-food sector, these risks highlight the importance of being prepared, diversified, and resilient. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>Recent research supported by the UK’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) is shedding new light on one of nature’s most intriguing phenomena: the extraordinary lifespan and fertility of queen bees.</p><p>Bees are best known for their role in pollination, biodiversity, and food production, but their significance extends beyond agriculture. Increasingly, scientists are turning their attention to bees for insights into human health—specifically, what these small but complex creatures might reveal about ageing and fertility.</p><p>Central to this emerging area of research is the queen bee. Despite sharing almost identical genetics with the worker bees in her colony, the queen lives significantly longer and remains fertile for the entirety of her life. <h3>Introduction&nbsp;</h3><p>There’s exciting news out of Carlow this month, where plans have been unveiled for what will become Ireland’s largest biogas plant. This ambitious project is more than just another energy development — it represents a real shift in how we think about waste, farming, and our national approach to sustainability.</p><p>Once built, the facility will process vast amounts of organic material — everything from agricultural slurry to food waste — and convert it into renewable biogas. The result is a methane-rich gas that can be used to generate energy, along with a nutrient-rich by-product called digestate.</p><p>But it’s not just about energy production. Biogas ticks several critical boxes:</p><p>It tackles emissions at the source. Methane is over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide in the short term. By capturing it from waste that would otherwise release it into the atmosphere, we’re making a real dent in agricultural emissions.<br>It supports energy independence. Biogas is produced year-round using local materials — reducing reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets.<br>It gives waste a second life. Ireland generates over one million tonnes of food waste each year. Instead of sending it to landfill, we can turn it into something useful.<br>It feeds the soil, not just the grid. Digestate, the by-product of biogas production, can be used on farms as a natural fertiliser. It’s lower in odour, safer for water quality, and kinder to the land than untreated slurry.<br>At present, less than 1% of Ireland’s gas supply comes from renewable sources. Compare that with Denmark, where over 20% of the gas grid is fed by biomethane, and it’s clear we’ve some catching up to do. The good news? As mentioned, in Denmark, more than a quarter of manure is processed through AD plants, and farm incomes are often stabilised through these partnerships.
