<h3>Introduction</h3><p>There’s been plenty of talk about the €80 million biomethane plant going up in Duleek, Co Meath, but for farmers living within reach of it, this isn’t just another renewable-energy headline. It could genuinely change how some farms earn their money. The developer, Carbon AMS, says the plant will pull in grass and other feedstocks from farms within roughly a 15 km radius and will produce around 42 GWh of biomethane a year. Transport, handling and storage aren’t free, and they’ll eat into whatever income the contract brings.</li><li>What happens in a bad year? Yields can fall. Rain can ruin a cut. Anyone signing up will need to know what happens if nature doesn’t play ball.</li><li>Will it pull grass away from your livestock? If you’re already tight for silage or grazing, this might not slot into your system without knock-on effects.</li><li>Does it suit the layout of your farm? For many farmers, especially in the west and northwest, it felt like someone had finally listened. You ring the vet and they’re already covering three calls. Calving issues at 2am, lame cows on a wet Tuesday morning, sick lambs before breakfast, it all hinges on having someone available, and too often they simply aren’t.</p><p>Ireland has been patching the gap with foreign-trained graduates for years. In 2021 alone, around 70% of new vets registering in Ireland had trained outside the country, and 45% were foreign-qualified vets altogether. ATU has moved the first intake to September 2026, giving time for accreditation and the construction of a new €41 million veterinary facility on campus. The plan is to take in about 30 students per year, a number that won’t overwhelm the system but will steadily build the workforce.</p><p>It won’t solve the vet shortage on day one. Training takes five years, and the first graduates won’t hit the ground until the early 2030s. Jobs follow the investment.</p><p>And in towns like Letterkenny, Ballinasloe, Tuam, Glenamaddy or Mountbellew, places with deep agricultural roots but limited higher-education infrastructure, that matters. ATU’s New Vet Course: Transforming Rural Ireland

<h3>Introduction</h3><p>Irish grocery inflation has edged back to 6.06%, and while that may make for a tidy headline, it doesn’t automatically translate into good news for the people producing the food. When prices start to soften at the checkout, it usually means someone further up the chain has taken the hit, and it’s rarely the retailer.</p><p>Yes, shoppers are beginning to get a small breather (if even), and yes, grocery sales still grew 5.5% over the past 12 weeks. But that rise comes from people spending more, not buying more. Farmers know that story all too well: higher turnover doesn’t mean healthier margins.</p><p>Meanwhile, nothing about the day-to-day costs of running a farm has fallen in any meaningful way. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>After two quiet years, bird flu has made its way back into Ireland’s poultry sector. Two commercial turkey farms, one in Carlow and another in Meath, have now confirmed cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1). It’s unwelcome news, especially heading into winter, and it has triggered a nationwide housing order for all poultry and captive birds.</p><p>For most farmers, this feels familiar. Anyone who went through the 2021–2022 wave knows how disruptive even a handful of cases can be. Backyard keepers sometimes assume these rules don’t apply to them, they do.</p><p>In practice, you now need to:</p><ul><li>House birds indoors or under a fully covered run.</li><li>Keep feed, water, and bedding protected from wild birds.</li><li>Use footbaths at entry points.</li><li>Keep equipment and personnel movements to a minimum.</li><li>Maintain solid rodent control.</li><li>Separate waterfowl from other poultry entirely.</li></ul><p>Larger flocks (350 birds or more) have extra requirements around shed zoning, vehicle control and equipment management.
