<h3>Introduction</h3><p>For many people, the arrival of spring in rural Ireland is marked by familiar sights and sounds, the soaring song of the skylark, the unmistakable call of the Curlew or swallows returning to nest in farmyards. Yet across much of the country, these once-common birds are becoming less familiar.</p><p>This is more than simply a wildlife issue. Farmland birds are widely recognised as one of the clearest indicators of the health of Ireland's agricultural landscape. Their populations reflect the condition of our hedgerows, grasslands, wetlands and field margins, providing valuable insight into how the countryside is changing.</p><p>With approximately 63% of Ireland's land used for agriculture, farmers play a central role in shaping the habitats these birds depend upon. More importantly, scientists regard farmland birds as indicator species because they respond quickly to changes in habitat quality, food availability and farming practices.</p><p>Ireland monitors the health of its countryside through the Common Farmland Bird Index, which tracks 14 widespread breeding farmland bird species. Since monitoring began in 1998, the index has become one of Ireland's key measures of biodiversity, helping researchers identify changes occurring across agricultural landscapes.</p><p>Healthy bird populations often indicate healthy farmland. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>For generations, Ireland has been known for its abundant rainfall, lush green fields and reliable water supplies. Water shortages were rarely considered a major concern for agriculture or rural communities.</p><p>However, the nationwide hosepipe ban introduced this summer tells a different story. Following weeks of exceptionally dry weather and increased demand, public water supplies have come under significant pressure, prompting Uisce Éireann to introduce a Water Conservation Order across every county in Ireland.</p><p>While the restrictions primarily affect households and businesses connected to the public water network, they also raise a much broader issue for Irish agriculture. Reservoirs, rivers and water treatment plants have all come under increasing pressure as water levels declined while demand for drinking water rose sharply.</p><p>According to Uisce Éireann, water consumption has been running at approximately 20% above normal levels in many parts of the country during the recent spell of hot weather. The nationwide restrictions came into effect on 24 July and are expected to remain in place until at least 26 August, although this will depend on weather conditions and the recovery of water supplies.</p><p>Although Ireland receives around 1,200mm of rainfall annually on average—considerably more than many European countries—our water infrastructure is not designed to cope with prolonged periods of low rainfall combined with exceptionally high demand. It is finding practical ways to deliver both.</p><p>Many Irish farmers are already demonstrating that this balance is possible. Ireland's Pollinators: Why Protecting Nature Also Protects Irish Farming

<h3>Introduction</h3><p>From 1 July to 31 December 2026, Ireland holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the eighth time since joining what was then the European Economic Community in 1973. Although the Presidency lasts just six months, it places Ireland at the centre of European decision-making during one of the most significant periods of change for agriculture in recent decades.</p><p>While the Presidency covers everything from security and international affairs to economic competitiveness, agriculture is expected to feature prominently. Food security, trade, sustainability, the future of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and reducing unnecessary bureaucracy are all expected to dominate discussions.</p><p>For Irish farmers, the Presidency will not bring immediate changes to payments or regulations. Instead, it coordinates negotiations between Member States, chairs ministerial meetings and helps build agreement on new European legislation.</p><p>During Ireland's Presidency, Irish ministers and officials will chair hundreds of meetings affecting more than 450 million EU citizens.
