Statistics indicate that nearly half of those injured require more than three days off work, with around 46% needing hospitalisation. Notably, algae grow approximately 10 times faster than traditional crops, with biomass that can be harvested every few days, providing a rapid turnover of usable material​</p><p>Moreover, algae absorbs significant quantities of carbon dioxide (CO₂) during photosynthesis, with an impressive rate of up to 2 kg of CO₂ sequestered for every kilogram of algae biomass produced​. This makes algae a powerful ally in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the EU’s climate goals. Ireland, specifically, has a well-established relationship with seaweed cultivation, harvesting around 29,500 tonnes in 2019, including both wild and cultivated seaweed. The resulting bioplastics offer a durable yet compostable alternative, breaking down in a fraction of the time it takes conventional plastics to decompose. Under composting conditions, algae-based bioplastics degrade in just 3-6 months, as opposed to conventional plastics, which can take hundreds of years to decompose​</p><p>The process typically involves cultivating algae in controlled environments, such as photobioreactors, which optimise light exposure, nutrients, and CO₂ levels to maximise growth. Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, has pointed out that oats thrive in Irish conditions and that there is significant potential for expanding oat production to meet the growing demand for plant-based dairy alternatives.</p><p><strong>2. Evolving Consumer Demands</strong><br>It’s important to recognise that while plant-based diets are on the rise, the demand for meat and dairy hasn’t disappeared. Consumers are becoming more selective, seeking out sustainably produced, ethically sourced, and high-quality animal products. Irish farmers, who already have a reputation for producing premium, grass-fed beef and dairy, can capitalise on this by continuing to emphasise their commitment to animal welfare and environmentally friendly practices.</p><p>Farmers may also find opportunities in hybrid markets, where consumers seek a balance between plant-based and traditional diets. For example, the “flexitarian” movement—where people reduce, but don’t completely eliminate, meat consumption—is gaining popularity. Flexitarians, who make up 22% of the global population according to Kantar, provide a significant market for both plant-based and sustainably produced animal products. Irish farmers could market their meat and dairy products as part of a balanced diet, emphasising sustainable production methods that meet consumer demands for environmental responsibility.</p><p><strong>3. However, there is growing concern that smaller farms may struggle to meet the new environmental conditions and could miss out on crucial funding.</p><p>The average farm income in Ireland in 2020 was €26,000, but this varies widely by sector. Dairy farms averaged €74,200, while sheep farms, prevalent in more marginal areas, earned on average just €14,600. Ireland will need to balance the need for economic support with the imperative to meet environmental targets.
