<h3>Introduction</h3><p>When news broke in early 2026 that the European Union and India had finally agreed a trade deal, the reaction was immediate and emphatic. This was described as one of the biggest agreements the EU has ever signed, a deal decades in the making, and one that would reshape global trade relationships.</p><p>On paper, that’s true. But when you look at it through an Irish farming lens, the picture becomes more complicated. In global terms, that’s enormous. The two blocs account for roughly one quarter of global GDP and around one third of global trade.</p><p>The mechanics of the deal are equally striking:</p><ul><li>Tariffs will be removed or reduced on 96.6% of goods traded by value between the EU and India.</li><li>EU exporters are expected to save up to €4 billion per year in customs duties once the agreement is fully in force.</li></ul><p>On top of that, EU projections suggest exports from the EU to India could double by 2032, driven mainly by improved access for industrial goods, manufactured products and services.</p><p>For many sectors, that’s a game changer. There’s no phased reduction, no headline market opening, and no sudden access to a fast-growing consumer base.</p><p>This wasn’t an accident or an oversight. It reflects political reality. India continues to protect its domestic farming sector, which supports hundreds of millions of people. Those are precisely the products that sit firmly on the “sensitive” list in this deal.</p><p>In practical terms:</p><ul><li>Irish beef and dairy do not gain preferential access to the Indian market.</li><li>At the same time, Irish farmers are protected from increased imports of those same products entering the EU at reduced tariffs.</li></ul><p>So there’s no immediate upside, but no immediate threat either.</p><p>What it does underline, though, is a wider trend that farmers recognise all too well. They fall into the category of processed, value-added products, rather than primary agricultural commodities.</p><p>As a result:</p><ul><li>Indian import duties on European spirits, which have historically been as high as 150%, are set to be reduced to 40% over time.<br>That change is significant, because India is already one of the fastest-growing whiskey markets in the world.</li></ul><p>The numbers tell their own story:</p><ul><li>In 2024, Irish whiskey sales in India exceeded 700,000 cases.</li><li>This represented a 57% increase on the previous year.</li><li>Sales were around 900% higher than in 2020.</li></ul><p>Those figures matter because they show where trade deals are delivering tangible gains. Growth in processing, drink and export-led sectors supports rural employment. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>Irish aquaculture is talked about a lot, but rarely understood. It tends to surface in public discussion only when there’s a dispute, a delay, or an objection. Outside of those moments, it fades into the background, even though it’s producing food every day and supporting livelihoods along the coast.</p><p>That disconnect matters. These aren’t abstract roles. They’re people working on sites, in hatcheries, in processing facilities, in logistics and support services that keep farms operating.</p><p>The sector generates hundreds of millions of euro in economic activity each year and contributes a significant share of Ireland’s seafood supply. Farmed salmon, oysters and mussels make up a substantial portion of what’s eaten at home and what’s sold abroad.</p><p>In simple terms, aquaculture accounts for roughly 40% of Ireland’s total seafood production. All of it applies, all of the time.</p><p>Production levels are cappe, stocking densities are controlled, environmental thresholds are set and enforced.</p><p>Taken together, aquaculture is one of the most tightly regulated forms of food production in Ireland. But most of that regulation is invisible to the public. People see cages, ropes or trestles from the shore. During that time, farms are effectively frozen. Investment is put on hold. Expansion isn’t possible. Even basic planning becomes guesswork.</p><p>Equipment ages, staff move on, businesses operate in limbo.</p><p>These kinds of delays are not typical elsewhere in Europe, but they’ve become part of the landscape here. Stock health, labour, equipment and compliance already fill the day. Public communication rarely makes it to the top of the list.</p><p>There’s also caution. Years of legal challenge and scrutiny have taught many operators to keep their heads down, even when they’re operating fully within the rules.</p><p>And aquaculture doesn’t fit neatly into how people imagine farming. It’s not on land, it’s not easy to visit, it doesn’t match familiar images of fields or sheds. Climate impacts are becoming more unpredictable year by year.</p><p>Aquaculture is one of the few food sectors capable of producing animal protein at scale without using agricultural land or freshwater. That makes it strategically important, whether or not the public conversation reflects it.</p><p>If Irish aquaculture is to remain viable, invest responsibly and support coastal communities, it needs more than regulation. It means explaining reality plainly and early.</p><p>It means stating clearly that aquaculture supports around 2,300 jobs, contributes hundreds of millions of euro to the economy, accounts for around 40% of seafood production, and operates under licensing delays measured in years, not months.</p><p>When those facts are missing, debate becomes distorted. What unfolded there wasn’t a symbolic gathering or a token show of opposition, it was one of the largest farming-related protests Ireland has seen in recent years.</p><p>Attendance figures varied, as they often do with events of this scale. Garda estimates put the crowd at around 27,000 people, while organisers said the turnout was closer to 30,000. Even at the lower end, it was a substantial mobilisation by any standard.</p><p>Farmers travelled from every corner of the country, many arriving by tractor, others by bus or car, joined by rural families and supporters. It is designed to reduce tariffs and expand trade flows between Europe and South America across a wide range of sectors, including agriculture.</p><p>That scale is exactly what has unsettled many in Irish farming.</p><p>For beef farmers in particular, the concern is straightforward. The deal would increase access for South American beef into the EU market. Installers understand it. At the same time, 2.6 billion people were unable to afford a healthy diet.</p><p>Those aren’t abstract numbers. They reflect food systems under strain from conflict, climate shocks and economic pressure, the same forces that farmers everywhere are grappling with in different forms.</p><p>When production breaks down in one part of the world, it doesn’t stay neatly contained. It feeds into migration pressures, political unrest, and disrupted markets. Ireland trades into those markets, whether directly or indirectly.</p><p>Second, the fact that €5 million of the WFP funding is explicitly tied to hunger linked to climate change tells you something important: food production, climate risk and security are now inseparable in global policy. That’s the same reality farmers are adjusting to at home, just under far harsher conditions elsewhere.</p><p>Third, Ireland’s involvement isn’t just financial. By engaging through FAO and WFP, Ireland has influence in discussions about food systems, standards, resilience and agricultural policy at an international level. Ireland's €4.34m UN Funding: Bridging Global Goals and Local Farming

<h3>Introduction</h3><p>Litter isn’t always the first thing that comes up in farming conversations, but it has a way of creeping into daily life anyway. It turns up in gateways, along hedges, in drains, and on stretches of road that someone has to clean, usually the person living beside it.</p><p>That’s why the latest national litter survey is worth a closer look. That’s 70% of locations.</p><p>That’s a big shift when you think back even ten or fifteen years, when being labelled “clean” in a national survey felt like the exception rather than the rule.</p><p>This year also marked the first time Sligo finished top of the rankings, and, just as notably, no location was classed as “seriously littered”. That last point matters. Bottle banks were once almost guaranteed trouble spots; overflow, dumping, bags left beside them for days.</p><p>That hasn’t vanished entirely, but the fact that none reached blackspot status this time around says something important: some long-standing problems really are being pushed back.</p><p>Surveyors also noted a reduction in large accumulations of litter and dumping compared with previous years. That doesn’t mean every area is spotless, but it does mean the scale of the mess is shrinking in many places.</p><figure id="figure-69q8zpnuxmk1dxxse" class=""><img id="69q8zpnuxmk1dxxse" src="https://cdn.durable.co/getty/22RvZACvPVKVN44gICbax9qD6FFbgt80pq4UG1zLwM0A7NF2Mff0E9650EhbqIIN.jpeg" alt="Recyle Bins" title="Recyle Bins" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/getty/22RvZACvPVKVN44gICbax9qD6FFbgt80pq4UG1zLwM0A7NF2Mff0E9650EhbqIIN.jpeg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure><h3>Deposit Return Is Doing Exactly What It Was Supposed to Do<br></h3><p>If there’s one area where the data is very clear, it’s the impact of the Deposit Return Scheme, which was introduced in February 2024.</p><p>Since then:</p><ul><li>Plastic bottles and cans are around 10% less prevalent in litter than last year.</li><li>More strikingly, they are around 60% less prevalent than before the scheme began.<br></li></ul><p>On the recycling side, the change has been dramatic. More than 1.6 billion bottles and cans have already been returned, and it’s estimated that around 798 million additional containers per year are now being recycled compared with the situation before the scheme.</p><p>Recycling rates for drink containers have jumped from about 49% to roughly 91%.</p><p>For anyone living in the countryside, that isn’t abstract. Despite plans to phase them out over the course of 2026, their presence in litter has not yet declined.</p><p>That contrast is telling. Where there’s a strong system in place, like deposit return, behaviour changes quickly. In reality, litter doesn’t stay put.</p><p>Lightweight waste moves. It blows, it washes, it ends up in places it was never dropped. And less drifting waste means less time spent dealing with someone else’s mess.</p><p>The challenge now is to keep the momentum going, especially for the litter types that haven’t yet been tackled with the same focus.</p><p>The data shows we know what works.
