The latest data shows grocery price inflation has crept up to just over 4.5%, which is around 1.16 percentage points higher than this time last year. People are budgeting more carefully, weighing up value for money, and increasingly taking advantage of promotions and special offers, which now account for 23% of total grocery spending—up from 19% in 2024.</p><p>In other words, the promotional aisle isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s becoming a key part of how people shop.</p><p>We’re also seeing a steady shift towards own-label products—the supermarket’s own versions of everything from pasta to yoghurt. These ranges are no longer seen as the ‘cheap’ option. In fact, many have improved in quality and are marketed with sustainability in mind. Sales of own-label items have jumped by 4.5% and now make up 47.6% of all value sales.</p><p>That said, brand loyalty is holding strong too. Branded products have grown at exactly the same rate—also up 4.5%—with a market share of 47%. International politics, particularly trade relations with the United States, could soon have very real consequences for Irish producers and, ultimately, for consumers.</p><p>With Donald Trump now back in the White House, early signals suggest that a return to protectionist trade policy is firmly on the agenda. One of the key proposals currently under discussion is the introduction of tariffs on EU imports, with rates potentially ranging between 10% and 20%. While these are framed as measures to support American industries, the knock-on effects could hit Ireland’s agri-food sector hard.</p><p>The United States is one of Ireland’s most valuable agri-food export markets outside the EU. In 2024, Irish whiskey exports topped €1 billion, with around 40% of that going to the US. Irish butter has also become increasingly popular with American consumers, with exports rising by over 10% in a single year. These figures represent not just strong trade relationships, but also thousands of Irish jobs and rural livelihoods tied to their success.</p><p>When these proposed tariffs are fully implemented, it’s likely that Irish goods will become less competitive in the American market, simply due to the added cost. That could result in reduced demand, slower exports, and producers facing the challenge of finding alternative markets at short notice.</p><p>The impact doesn’t stop at the border. If EU producers as a whole begin to face barriers selling into the US, many will turn their focus back to the European market—including Ireland. That could lead to an oversupply in certain product categories, which in turn would drive down prices. For Irish producers already grappling with rising input costs, this would make already tight margins even tighter.</p><p>And those input costs are worth a mention on their own. Irish farms are deeply integrated with global supply chains when it comes to essentials like animal feed, fertilisers, fuel, and packaging. Between 2021 and 2023, input costs for Irish farms increased by around 27%, driven mainly by global price fluctuations in energy and fertiliser. If international trade tensions rise, those costs could climb further—making it more expensive to produce food here at home.</p><p>It’s a clear reminder that global politics are anything but abstract. Decisions made in Washington can directly affect the cost of producing a litre of milk in Mayo or a packet of cheese in Meath.</p><p>For those working across the agri-food sector, these risks highlight the importance of being prepared, diversified, and resilient. Understanding Grocery Price Inflation in Ireland

<h3>Introduction</h3><p>Recent research supported by the UK’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) is shedding new light on one of nature’s most intriguing phenomena: the extraordinary lifespan and fertility of queen bees.</p><p>Bees are best known for their role in pollination, biodiversity, and food production, but their significance extends beyond agriculture. Increasingly, scientists are turning their attention to bees for insights into human health—specifically, what these small but complex creatures might reveal about ageing and fertility.</p><p>Central to this emerging area of research is the queen bee. Despite sharing almost identical genetics with the worker bees in her colony, the queen lives significantly longer and remains fertile for the entirety of her life. Genetically, they are almost identical. Yet, their lives diverge dramatically. The queen can live between three to five years, while worker bees typically survive only six to seven weeks during the summer. Winter workers live a little longer, up to around five months, as their workload decreases.</p><p>In terms of fertility, the differences are even more pronounced. The queen bee lays between 1,500 to 2,000 eggs per dayduring peak season, while worker bees are sterile under normal conditions. All larvae are initially fed royal jelly, a thick, protein-rich secretion produced by nurse bees. However, only those destined to become queens are fed royal jelly continuously.</p><p>This exclusive diet activates specific developmental pathways. Queens develop functioning ovaries, grow larger bodies, and gain enhanced immunity and longevity. Research suggests that compounds in royal jelly trigger epigenetic changes—modifications in gene expression without altering the DNA sequence itself.</p><p>In simple terms, royal jelly doesn’t change the blueprint—it changes how the blueprint is read and used. Their shorter lifespan is linked not only to the intensity of their roles, but also to their biological development, which is limited compared to queens.</p><p>In summer, when foraging demands are high, a worker bee’s life expectancy can be as short as 35–45 days. In winter, when activity slows and bees cluster to maintain warmth, workers can live up to 150–200 days. This hormone regulates a wide range of biological processes in insects, from metamorphosis to reproduction, and is now being explored for its links to ageing in broader animal systems.</p><p>Scientists are interested in whether hormone modulation, as seen in bees, might hold clues for extending healthspan and delaying reproductive decline in humans. Roughly 75% of the world’s leading food crops depend to some extent on pollination. In Europe, over 4,000 species of bees and other pollinators help to sustain crop yields, plant diversity, and healthy ecosystems.</p><p>However, pollinator populations are under strain from habitat loss, pesticide use, disease, and climate change. According to some estimates, one in ten wild bee species in Europe is currently facing extinction.</p><p>This makes continued bee research not only valuable but urgent. The result is a methane-rich gas that can be used to generate energy, along with a nutrient-rich by-product called digestate.</p><p>But it’s not just about energy production. Biogas ticks several critical boxes:</p><p>It tackles emissions at the source. Methane is over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide in the short term. By capturing it from waste that would otherwise release it into the atmosphere, we’re making a real dent in agricultural emissions.<br>It supports energy independence. Biogas is produced year-round using local materials — reducing reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets.<br>It gives waste a second life. Ireland generates over one million tonnes of food waste each year. Instead of sending it to landfill, we can turn it into something useful.<br>It feeds the soil, not just the grid. Digestate, the by-product of biogas production, can be used on farms as a natural fertiliser. It’s lower in odour, safer for water quality, and kinder to the land than untreated slurry.<br>At present, less than 1% of Ireland’s gas supply comes from renewable sources. Compare that with Denmark, where over 20% of the gas grid is fed by biomethane, and it’s clear we’ve some catching up to do. The good news? As mentioned, in Denmark, more than a quarter of manure is processed through AD plants, and farm incomes are often stabilised through these partnerships. We need to ask ourselves how prepared we truly are for the financial consequences of a warming world, and how much we need to adjust our current models to better reflect these future risks.</p><p>This study is not a final answer, but rather an invitation to re-evaluate the economic assumptions we have made up until now. The Economic Impact of Climate Change: A Call for Urgent Action

<h3>Introduction</h3><p>Not too long ago, it felt like the sky was the limit for Irish dairy. When EU milk quotas were scrapped in 2015, it sparked a wave of optimism across the country. Farmers who’d been held back by decades of restrictions were finally free to expand, and many didn’t hesitate.</p><p>Milk flowed, herds grew, and the industry surged ahead. Between 2015 and 2020, milk output shot up by over 40%, and Ireland’s dairy herd climbed from around 1.2 million cows in 2010 to over 1.6 million in 2022. Exports boomed too, hitting €6.3 billion in 2022, with Irish butter and cheese reaching tables as far afield as China, Africa and the Middle East.</p><p>But fast-forward to today, and things are starting to shift. Climate targets, environmental rules, rising costs, and an evolving market have all conspired to change the direction of travel.</p><p>Farming is still the backbone of rural Ireland, but it’s under more scrutiny than ever. Agriculture is responsible for around 37.5% of Ireland’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Within that, the dairy sector contributes roughly 21%, mostly from methane and fertilisers. From 2024, Ireland’s nitrates derogation dropped from 250 kg N/ha to 220 kg N/ha in many parts of the country. For around 3,000 affected farmers— particularly those in the Golden Vale and other high-stocked regions — this has created a serious headache.</p><p>Some are being forced to cut cow numbers. Others are scrambling to lease extra land. All of them are trying to balance compliance with the day-to-day reality of running a viable business.</p><p>And it’s not happening in a vacuum. Input costs — especially fertiliser — have been volatile, peaking at €1,200 per tonne in 2022. Over 90% of Ireland’s dairy output is exported, making us highly exposed to global politics and market shifts. In recent years, we’ve seen just how vulnerable that makes us.</p><p>During Donald Trump’s presidency, the US imposed stiff tariffs — up to 25% — on a range of EU agri-food products, including iconic Irish dairy items like butter and cheddar. The move, linked to a wider dispute over aircraft subsidies, hit Irish exporters hard. Some were forced to pull back; others took the financial hit just to keep their place in the market.</p><p>Although many of those tariffs were eased under President Biden, the lesson was clear: global politics can shake things at farm level, and fast. With Trump once again running for office, there’s real concern that a second term could bring renewed tariffs or other trade disruptions.</p><p>Beyond the US, competition is heating up globally. Demand from China — once a key driver of global dairy prices — has cooled. Buyers in Europe are placing more weight on carbon footprints, animal welfare, and traceability. And new players are entering the market, often with lower production costs.</p><p>In short: quality isn’t enough anymore. Technology is starting to make a real difference — from precision grazing systems and real-time herd monitoring, to soil testing and low-emission slurry spreading (LESS).</p><p>The uptake of LESS has been particularly encouraging — used on over 70% of farms now, up from just 20% in 2016. It’s reducing ammonia loss, improving nutrient efficiency, and helping farmers stay within regulatory limits.</p><p>Selective breeding is also proving its worth. By choosing cows with better feed efficiency and lower methane output, farmers are seeing productivity gains of 5–10% per animal.
