<h3>Introduction</h3><p>Cattle have been in the firing line of climate debates for years, mainly because of methane, a greenhouse gas that is about 28 times more potent than CO₂ over a century. Agriculture is under pressure everywhere, and in Ireland the challenge is especially sharp: over 6.5 million cattle contribute a large share of national emissions. One of the more talked-about ideas for tackling this is feeding cattle seaweed. The question is simple enough, can it really work on Irish farms, and if so, at scale?</p><figure id="figure-xpd304k1vmev9vnk7" class=""><img id="xpd304k1vmev9vnk7" src="https://cdn.durable.co/getty/1agYY3ZkSOIhNyZNRp7VURVykn9wIKOLynxsgfrwkhUKPiLJJtBrPWTjtd8ZYBVP.jpeg" alt="cattle methane" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/getty/1agYY3ZkSOIhNyZNRp7VURVykn9wIKOLynxsgfrwkhUKPiLJJtBrPWTjtd8ZYBVP.jpeg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h3>Why Seaweed?</h3><p>The hype began with trials in Australia and the U.S., where a red seaweed, Asparagopsis taxiformis, cut methane from cattle by up to 80% in controlled feedlot systems. It works because compounds in the seaweed, mainly bromoform, disrupt the microbes in the cow’s rumen that produce methane.</p><p>Here in Ireland, Teagasc and university researchers have been testing native brown seaweeds such as Ascophyllum nodosum, harvested from our own coastline. The results so far are more modest, showing methane reductions in the range of 10–20%. The difference matters: Asparagopsis isn’t naturally available here, and importing it in bulk isn’t practical or sustainable. Multiply that across Ireland’s national herd, and it could transform our emissions profile. But the practicalities are not so simple.</p><p>Seaweed needs to be fed daily and consistently, which works in zero-grazing or feedlot systems but not in Ireland’s grass-based model. Dosing grazing animals is a logistical nightmare without a bolus or slow-release technology.</p><p>There’s also the issue of supply. Covering even a fraction of the national herd would require tens of thousands of tonnes of seaweed every year. Right now, Ireland’s entire commercial seaweed industry is only harvesting around 30,000 tonnes, mostly for cosmetics and niche nutrition products. Current estimates suggest methane-reducing additives would add €60–€100 per cow per year. On a 100-cow herd, that’s €6,000–€10,000 annually,&nbsp; a big ask unless there’s a clear return. At present, farmers don’t receive direct payments for reducing methane, and the carbon credit markets for livestock are still at the pilot stage.</p><p>Policy may eventually change this. Ireland has legally committed to a 25% cut in agricultural emissions by 2030, and the government is already signalling that feed additives could feature in future CAP schemes or Bord Bia sustainability programmes. Teagasc trials show 10–20% reductions with native species, but dosing grazing cattle remains the biggest challenge. The cost, €60–€100 per cow per year, is also prohibitive without support from CAP, Bord Bia, or new carbon-credit systems. Farmers should keep an eye on ongoing trials, on signals from the next CAP review, and on what export markets demand, because pressure may come from buyers as much as from policymakers. It already has EU approval and is being rolled out in some dairy systems. Like seaweed, though, it’s easier to use in total mixed ration systems, not in pasture-based models like Ireland’s. Researchers are working on boluses and slow-release technologies, but they’re still in development.</p><p>Globally, other countries are pushing hard. In New Zealand, where livestock methane makes up about 80% of agricultural emissions, seaweed and 3-NOP are being trialled. In the U.S., the feedlot model makes adoption easier, and some companies are preparing commercial rollout of Asparagopsis. International buyers value “grass-fed” beef and dairy, a selling point that underpins Bord Bia’s Origin Green brand. If feed additives become standard globally, Irish exports could come under pressure to follow suit. The danger is undermining our natural, grass-based image; the opportunity is leading the way in finding pasture-compatible solutions.</p><p>If Ireland can crack the delivery problem, perhaps through bolus technology, it could position itself as a leader in sustainable livestock. The science shows it can cut methane, sometimes dramatically. The challenge is making it practical and affordable in systems like Ireland’s, where cattle spend most of the year at grass. Right now, the economics don’t add up for most farmers, and the logistics are still a work in progress.</p><p>The likely future is that seaweed, alongside other additives like 3-NOP, will form part of a wider package: selective breeding, better slurry management, and more efficient use of land and animals. Farmers should see it as one tool among many, not the silver bullet. If policy and markets start rewarding verified methane reductions, seaweed could well find its place. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>Water has always been the invisible partner in farming. But in 2025, it is anything but invisible. Farmers now use 70% of all freshwater withdrawals worldwide, yet climate extremes, expanding cities, and energy projects are tightening supply like never before. Once it was a symbol of abundance. Today it’s a symbol of crisis. The river still irrigates about 5.5 million acres of farmland and provides drinking water to 40 million people across seven U.S. states and northern Mexico. But the numbers are grim: flows have already fallen by nearly 20% since 2000, and scientists reckon they could drop another 10–30% by 2050.</p><p>In Arizona, more than 70% of water withdrawals go to farming, mostly alfalfa for dairy herds. But as reservoirs like Lake Mead and Lake Powell hit historic lows in 2022 and 2023, agriculture was first in line for cuts. In fact, in 2023 alone Arizona farmers lost access to 500,000 acre-feet of water, enough to keep half a million acres in production.</p><p>The fight isn’t just between farmers and nature, though. Cities like Phoenix and Las Vegas are demanding secure supplies. Conservation groups want minimum flows to keep the river alive. Indigenous tribes are pressing their senior water rights, many of which pre-date statehood. Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the largest hydropower project in Africa at 5,150 MW, has been celebrated at home as a symbol of progress. But downstream, Egypt sees it as an existential threat.</p><p>Egypt relies on the Nile for more than 90% of its water. Its Delta alone irrigates about 6 million hectares, much of it in wheat and rice. With over 100 million mouths to feed, even a small cut in river flow could devastate production. Climate models already suggest Nile flows could fall by 20–30% by 2050, and farmers in the Delta are already noticing the knock-on effects. Saline water from the Mediterranean is creeping inland, fields are less productive, and Sudan’s once-prized Gezira irrigation plain is under increasing stress.</p><p>The Colorado is messy, the Nile is explosive. Eleven countries share the basin, but it’s Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia locked in a decade-long standoff. Globally, about 40% of irrigated crops depend on groundwater, and the hotspots are Asia’s giants.</p><p>In India, groundwater supplies about 60% of irrigation, but the wells are emptying fast. Punjab and Haryana, the Green Revolution’s heartlands, are losing water at around 0.5 metres a year. By 2030, 60% of India’s aquifers will be critically stressed. That raises a brutal question: can India keep exporting rice and wheat if its wells collapse?</p><p>China isn’t in better shape. The Yellow River basin irrigates around 15% of its farmland, yet the river often fails to reach the sea. Over 400 Chinese cities already face water shortages. Farmers are being nudged towards sorghum and millet, which need less water, but these aren’t one-for-one substitutes for wheat and maize in terms of either diet or trade. Irrigation bans hit olives, citrus and vegetables hard, cutting olive oil output by almost 50% and driving global prices to record highs. Spain usually produces half of the world’s olive oil, so the world felt it immediately.</p><p>France had its worst maize harvest in 30 years in 2022, with yields down 19% after heatwaves and drought. In Italy, the River Po, lifeline for about 30% of the country’s agriculture, recorded its lowest flow in 70 years, hammering rice farmers in the north. And even in central Europe, where water has never been a pressing issue, 2025 brought spring rainfall deficits of 40–50% below average in eastern Germany and western Poland, delaying sowing and cutting cereal yields.</p><p>Europe’s lesson is clear: drought is no longer confined to the Mediterranean. Our challenge isn’t scarcity but balance. Wet winters swamp tanks and saturate fields, while drier summers can still leave grass growth faltering at critical points.</p><p>The policy pressure is mounting too. With the EU nitrates derogation reduced from 250 to 220 kg N/ha in 2024, stocking rates and nutrient management are now effectively water policy by another name. Farmers here know slurry storage is the other pinch point. A wet spring, like 2023, fills tanks before spreading windows open. A dry spring, like 2025, reminds us how quickly “too much water” can flip to “not enough.”</p><p>So Ireland’s water war is less about rivers drying up and more about how we handle extremes. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>There’s no shortage of schemes and acronyms in Irish farming, but the 2025 National Suckler Beef Welfare Scheme has caught people’s attention for a simple reason: it looks like money that’s actually within reach. At €75 per eligible calf, up to a maximum of 45 calves, it’s one of the more straightforward supports we’ve seen in recent years. The scheme is for breeding herds, not trading systems.</li></ul><p><br>That second rule in particular is where people often slip up. We’ve already heard from farmers who assumed a calf bought at the mart with its dam would qualify. Unfortunately, it won’t. If 14 calves qualify, that’s a payout of €1,050. That’s enough to cover the AI straws for the year, a round of calf vaccines, or even the cost of tags and registration fees.</li><li>A 30-cow herd could see a payment closer to €2,100. That would cover the entire silage wrap bill for the winter, or a good chunk of contractor costs.</li><li>Bigger herds hitting the 45-calf ceiling would bring in €3,375. For many, that’s a month’s ration bill for weanlings taken care of.</li></ul><p><br>On its own, it’s not going to make sucklers profitable overnight. Late registrations:</strong> In 2023, around 8% of calves nationally were registered late. That’s one in every twelve. And the rule here is black and white, miss the 27-day window and you lose the payment, no appeals.</p><p><strong>2. Paperwork slip-ups:</strong> Calves logged under the wrong category or herd details not matching have caused headaches before. The devil really is in the detail, especially when applications are flying in at the last minute.</p><p><strong>3. Wrong assumptions:</strong> As mentioned, purchased calves, even with the dam, won’t count. Last year, payments averaged €50–60 per calf once all conditions were met. This year, €75 per calf is a noticeable lift.</p><p>With around 800,000 suckler cows in Ireland (ICBF 2024), the potential money flowing into the sector is significant. Even if half the cows qualify, you’re looking at tens of millions of euro going straight into rural areas. For many farm households, that extra cash can be the difference between breaking even and slipping into the red.</p><p>It also signals that the Department knows support is badly needed. Suckler numbers have been slowly declining in recent years, with many younger farmers stepping back from the system due to cost pressures. It sounds like plenty of time, but as every farmer knows, deadlines have a way of sneaking up. <h3>Introduction&nbsp;</h3><p>Spring 2025 was not what most of us expected. Instead of battling mud and delayed turnout, we were dealing with record-breaking warmth and long, sunny spells. Met Éireann confirmed it as the warmest and sunniest spring in 126 years of records, with 20–30% more sunshine than normal. Rainfall was well below average, and by late May, cracks were opening in fields across the southeast and midlands. Many farmers were forced to introduce meal four to six weeks earlier than planned, at a cost of €1.50 to €2 per cow per day. On a 100-cow herd, that added up to anywhere between €4,000 and €8,000 before the start of June. Silage yields were down as well. On average, first cut was lighter by one to two bales per acre. For a 100-acre block, that’s 100–200 bales missing from the yard. At €40–€50 per bale to replace, you’re looking at another €4,000–€5,000 to make up the shortfall.&nbsp;</p><p>Sheep and suckler farms also felt the pinch. Early lamb thrive was excellent thanks to the warm conditions, but as grass tightened, creep feed was introduced weeks earlier than usual. That added €25–€30 per lamb to costs. Water was another stress point. Shallow wells and streams dried up early in some regions, leaving farmers with little choice but to tanker water or, in more extreme cases, sink new boreholes. Paddocks with clover or multispecies swards held on longer and kept stock grazing for a few extra days. Where soil fertility was at target levels for phosphorus and potassium, regrowth after grazing was noticeably better. And those with well-maintained water infrastructure managed stock stress far more easily than those scrambling to drag pipes across dry fields.</p><p>One Carlow dairy farmer summed it up well; “I grew more grass in March than May. But not every farm can afford that. Thankfully, resilience can be built with smaller, cheaper steps. Clover overseeding, at around €120 per acre, is a cost many farmers have found worthwhile. It boosts drought tolerance and reduces fertiliser dependence. Water troughs are another simple win. An extra trough at €80–€120 can prevent crowding, reduce walking stress, and make a big difference in hot weather.</p><p>For feed planning, bartering and local swapping have already become more common. A growing number of tillage farmers are open to straw-for-silage or forage trades, which can be a lifeline when fodder is short. And for those really under pressure, designating a “sacrifice paddock” avoids hammering the whole farm when grass simply won’t regrow. Planning must change. Building silage insurance by targeting 10–15% more than winter needs should be a priority. Feed budgets should be done monthly, not left until August when it is often too late. Local networks, like co-ops, discussion groups, even WhatsApp groups are becoming vital for quick feed swaps and silage deals. And perhaps most importantly, soil fertility cannot be ignored. Every Teagasc study continues to show that paddocks at the correct phosphorus and potassium levels grow one to two tonnes more dry matter per hectare, even in difficult weather. With volatile energy prices, generous grant aid, and more straightforward planning rules, solar PV on sheds is now a real, viable investment. Dozens of suppliers are chasing farm business, but not all panels and inverters are created equal. Lifespan, efficiency, and build quality vary, and the cheapest upfront price can often be the most expensive long-term. Solar PV delivers the best returns when you use most of the power yourself. Exporting to the grid is possible but pays less than buying electricity in. Energy use was split 70% during the day and 30% at night. The biggest consumers on the farm were the bulk tank, accounting for 52% of usage, hot water at 22%, the vacuum pump at 19%, and lighting at 6%.</p><p>Following a detailed on-site survey, the recommended system was a 30kW solar PV setup, paired with 15kWh of battery storage and a water heating diverter. This would require about 180 square metres of roof space, the equivalent of just over three spans of a standard 9-metre-wide shed.</p><p>The cost of the system came in at €64,276, including 13.5% VAT. Farmers can reclaim this VAT, which in this case was €7,645, reducing the net cost to €56,631. Applying the 60% SCIS grant to this balance shaved off €33,979, leaving a final net outlay of €22,640. Depending on the farmer’s tax rate, this cost could drop further thanks to the 100% year-one write-off: at the standard 20% income tax rate, the saving would be €4,528, reducing the outlay to €18,112; at the higher 40% rate, the saving would be €9,056, bringing the cost down to €13,584; for a farming company taxed at 12.5%, the saving would be €2,830, reducing the outlay to €19,810.</p><p>In terms of performance, the system was projected to generate 27,000 kWh per year, covering 59% of the farm’s annual electricity needs. With battery storage and the water heating diverter, the farm could use 65% of that energy on-site, saving about €6,142 per year. The remaining 35%, around 9,450 kWh, would be exported to the grid, earning approximately €1,512 annually at a rate of 16 cents per kWh.</p><p>When you add the on-site savings and the income from exports together, the annual benefit comes to around €7,654. Based on the net investment of €22,640, the payback period is just under three years, 2.95 years to be exact. Older asbestos or fibre-cement roofs may need strengthening, so a structural engineer’s check is worth it before you commit.</p><h3>Getting Connected to the Grid</h3><p>Under ESB Networks’ simplified Mini-Generation process, single-phase supplies can install up to 17kW inverter capacity (around 22–25kWp in panels) while three-phase supplies can go up to 50kW inverter capacity (around 75kWp in panels). For microgeneration systems under 9kWp single-phase or 15kWp three-phase, the grid connection is free and straightforward with just an NC6 form. CAP reforms, the Mercosur trade deal, and the nitrates derogation came up again and again. Tánaiste Simon Harris called farming “essential” and promised to keep fighting for a ring-fenced CAP budget. IFA President Francie Gorman warned that Mercosur could open the door to lower-standard beef imports, undermining Ireland’s 100,000 livestock farmers. Ireland as a whole has 133,174 farms, averaging 34.7 hectares each, and over half specialise in beef.
