<h3>Introduction</h3><p>From 16 to 25 May, communities across the country will come together to mark National Biodiversity Week 2025 . This is a nationwide invitation to step outside, explore what’s growing, crawling, and singing around us, and consider how we might better protect it.</p><p>Organised by the Irish Environmental Network, the week is packed with hundreds of free events from coastal walks and woodland workshops to photography competitions and schoolyard scavenger hunts. But this isn’t just a celebration for nature enthusiasts, it’s a moment for all of us to take stock of what’s changing in our natural world, and what we stand to lose if we don’t act.</p><p>At The Informed Farmer Consultancy,&nbsp; we work closely with communities, farmers, and landowners who see the impact of biodiversity loss first-hand, in the soil, in the hedgerows, and in the watercourses. It covers everything from otters and oak trees to soil bacteria, mosses, fungus, and earthworms. Both visible and unseen organisms work together in intricate processes that maintain the quality of our air, the growth of our food, and the (relatively) stability of our climate.&nbsp;</p><p>In Ireland, we’re lucky to have some extraordinary natural habitats; blanket bogs, limestone pavements, ancient woodlands and species-rich grasslands. But they’re not in good shape, and we’re losing species faster than we realise.</p><p>For instance:</p><ul><li>Around 31% of Ireland’s assessed species are at risk of extinction (NPWS).</li><li>Over 60% of our protected habitats are in “unfavourable” condition.</li><li>Iconic species like the curlew and the pearl mussel are now critically endangered.</li><li>One-third of Ireland’s wild bee species are also facing extinction – a serious concern for our food systems.<br></li></ul><p>The causes? But the reality is, it underpins our everyday lives.</p><p>Whether it’s the pollinators that keep our food crops growing, the wetlands that help prevent flooding, or the microorganisms that keep soil fertile, biodiversity is the quiet engine behind so much of what we take for granted.</p><p>It also plays a powerful role in our mental and physical wellbeing. Studies have shown that spending time in biodiverse green spaces reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, and improves concentration. Many of them family-friendly and open to anyone with a pair of boots and a bit of curiosity.</p><p>Here are just a few highlights:</p><ul><li><strong>Nature Walks and Field Events:</strong> Led by ecologists, park rangers and community groups, these offer a chance to explore hedgerows, shorelines, woodlands and meadows.</li><li><strong>Biodiversity Photographer of the Year:</strong> A national competition that invites people of all ages to capture nature in their local area.</li><li><strong>Schoolyard Scavenger Hunts: </strong>Designed to get children noticing the bugs, birds and plants in their own playgrounds. Many of the most effective biodiversity actions are small, local, and completely doable, even if you live in an apartment or have no garden at all.</p><p>Here are five practical things you can do this week:</p><p><strong>1. Leave it be:</strong><br>If you have any sort of outdoor space such as; a garden, a verge, or a patio container, try letting it grow a little wild. Dandelions, clover and wild grasses are a lifeline for pollinators, especially early in the year. Also, mowing less often makes a real difference.</p><p><br><strong>2. Plant for nature:</strong><br>Choose native species when you plant, things like hawthorn, foxglove, or heather. Even a window box of herbs like thyme and lavender can attract bees. And the more variety, the better.</p><p><br><strong>3. Log what you see:</strong><br>Use apps like the National Biodiversity Data Centre’s ‘Species Hub’ to record any wildlife sightings such as; birds, insects, plants, or even moss. These citizen science records feed into national conservation work and help experts track changes over time.</p><p><br><strong>4. Avoid garden chemicals:</strong><br>Herbicides and pesticides might offer a quick fix for weeds or pests, but they also harm beneficial insects, amphibians and birds. Switching to manual weeding or natural methods is far better for the ecosystem.</p><p><br><strong>5. Get to know your patch:</strong><br>Whether you walk the same park every day or live near a canal or woodland, try to notice what’s living there. not just the birds and butterflies, but the fungi, lichens, plants, and insects. In the last two and a half years, around 750,000 native trees have been planted.</p><p>It’s not just about trees. It’s people—farmers, volunteers, communities—getting stuck in and doing something about the environmental mess we’re in. More than half of our native plant species are in decline, and even habitats that are meant to be protected are struggling. Pollinators like bumblebees are slowly disappearing, and butterflies—always a good indicator of how nature’s doing—have seen their numbers drop by half in recent years.</p><p>The 100 Million Trees Project is a response to that reality—not just a nice idea, but something practical and rooted in action. It focuses on planting native Irish trees like oak, birch, rowan and hazel. These aren’t just pretty additions to the landscape—they’re vital for wildlife. They create shelter and food for birds, mammals, insects, fungi, and help build healthy soil. They also reconnect fragmented habitats, hold water in the land, and protect areas at risk of erosion and flooding.</p><p>If the project reaches its goal, it could take about 2.5% of Ireland’s carbon emissions out of the atmosphere. Across counties, from urban estates to rural farmyards, individuals and groups are coming together to plant trees in their own communities. In 2023 alone, over 200,000 trees were planted across 85 sites, and the project is on track to reach 550,000 across more than 200 sites this season.</p><p>Whether it's a weekend planting day with a local GAA club or a few neighbours restoring an old hedgerow, these moments of connection are just as important as the trees themselves. With the right mindset, planting trees can strengthen a farm, work alongside food production, and support a more resilient rural economy. Not that long ago, the island was covered in native woodland—oak, birch, hazel—home to a huge variety of birds, insects, and plants. These days, only about 1% of that original forest remains. And while forest cover has crept up to just over 11%, most of it is made up of fast-growing conifers that don’t offer much for wildlife.</p><p>The 100 Million Trees Project is trying to turn that around, one small patch of land at a time. By planting native trees in little pockets across the country, it’s slowly stitching back together the patchwork of habitats that once thrived here. As those trees take hold, the birds, butterflies, wildflowers—and all the other small lives that rely on them—begin to return too.</p><p>But this isn’t about looking backwards. It’s not just about what we’ve lost—it’s about what we need to survive now. Native woodlands help clean our water, protect our soil, and make the land more resilient in the face of a changing climate. This group includes farming organisations, vets, policy experts and environmental voices, ensuring any changes balance disease control with practical farming realities.</p><p>An interim report was handed to the Minister for Agriculture earlier this year, setting out a new direction for tackling TB. The group’s final report — due soon — is expected to contain clear recommendations for changes to testing, cattle movement controls, compensation schemes and biosecurity rules.</p><p>Pressure to act is growing. Ireland’s herd incidence rate is now more than double the EU average. By the mid-1990s, there were just 129 known individuals left in Ireland.</p><p>The culprit? These technologies allow experts to detect calls and heat signatures from a distance, dramatically reducing the risk of human interference.</p><p>The benefits are clear. Data collected using passive acoustic monitoring has helped pinpoint key breeding territories more accurately and quickly. In fact, a recent study found a 64% probability of detecting a corncrake at an occupied site during a night visit, highlighting the effectiveness of these methods . This not only increases the quality of research but also saves time and resources, allowing conservation teams to focus on protecting habitats rather than spending days manually surveying fields.</p><p>It's a prime example of how conservation can—and should—work hand in hand with sustainability. They’re delaying mowing until later in the summer, allowing chicks time to fledge, and managing field edges and nettle patches where corncrakes love to hide.</p><p>Some are even adopting centre-out mowing techniques, which have been shown to reduce chick deaths by up to 60%. <h3>The Rise of Offshore Wind Energy in Ireland</h3><p>Ireland is setting its sights on becoming a major force in offshore wind energy, with bold plans that could reshape both its economy and energy future. The Government has set clear targets: deliver 5GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and a remarkable 37GW by 2050.</p><p>If successful, this sector could add at least €38 billion to the economy, create thousands of new jobs, and strengthen Ireland’s position as a clean energy leader. Ireland’s ports, vital for constructing and servicing large-scale wind farms, currently lack the capacity to support the size and scale of projects being proposed. Major upgrades, involving significant investment, are urgently needed to keep ambitions on track.</p><p>The skills shortage is equally pressing.
