<h3>Introduction</h3><p>The recent detection of bluetongue in Northern Ireland has brought a long-recognised European livestock disease uncomfortably close to home. While the Republic of Ireland remains free of confirmed cases, the presence of the virus just across the border means every Irish livestock farmer now needs to be alert, informed and prepared.</p><p>This is not a crisis, but it is an early-warning phase. It is spread only by biting midges. It does not spread through direct animal contact, shared equipment, or normal farm handling.</p><p>Three essential facts every farmer should know:</p><ul><li>Bluetongue does not infect humans.</li><li>It does not affect food safety.</li><li>It relies entirely on midges for transmission.</li></ul><p><br>More than 25 different strains (serotypes) of the virus are recognised worldwide. The strain detected in Northern Ireland is BTV-3, which has caused outbreaks in several European countries over the past two years.</p><p>Because midges are responsible for spread, bluetongue is strongly seasonal. In temperate climates like Ireland, transmission risk rises during late spring through early autumn, when midge activity is highest. Once infected, signs usually develop within 5–20 days. Typical symptoms include:</p><ul><li>Fever.</li><li>Heavy drooling and nasal discharge.</li><li>Swollen lips, face or tongue.</li><li>Mouth ulcers that interfere with feeding.</li><li>Lameness due to inflammation around the hooves.</li><li>Abortions or weak lambs in pregnant ewes</li></ul><p><br>In severe outbreaks elsewhere in Europe, sheep mortality has reached very high levels in some naïve flocks, while in other outbreaks mortality has remained low. The important point is not the exact percentage, it is that losses can be significant, sudden and unpredictable, especially where animals have no prior exposure.</p><p>Even where sheep survive, long-term problems with fertility, teeth, feet and growth are well recognised following infection.</p><p><strong>Cattle</strong><br>Cattle usually show milder disease:</p><ul><li>Temporary fever.</li><li>Drop in milk yield.</li><li>Lameness.</li><li>Reduced fertility.</li></ul><p><br>Many cattle show no obvious symptoms at all, yet they can still carry the virus in their bloodstream for several weeks, during which time biting midges can spread infection to other animals. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>Irish aquaculture is quietly becoming one of the most important parts of our rural coastal economy, yet it rarely gets the same attention as beef or dairy. In value terms, the sector is now worth around €180–€200 million a year, supports over 2,000 direct jobs, and underpins many more in processing, transport, engineering and services along the coast.</p><p>At the heart of that growth debate sits one big question:<br><strong>Is the future of Irish aquaculture in shellfish or finfish?</strong></p><p>Both sectors are growing, both face real constraints, and both offer different kinds of opportunity. In value terms, shellfish and finfish are more evenly matched than the tonnage would suggest. Shellfish account for slightly over half of production by value, with finfish close behind.</p><p>Shellfish farming is dominated by rope-grown mussels, oysters and bottom-grown clams, with mussels representing the bulk of volume. Mussel production alone has doubled over the last decade, and Ireland now ranks among the larger mussel producers in northern Europe.</p><p>There are a few straightforward reasons for this:</p><p>Shellfish farming requires no external feed input, because mussels and oysters grow by filtering naturally occurring plankton. That keeps running costs relatively low and shields producers from global feed price shocks. In contrast, salmon feed costs rose sharply over the past five years due to grain, fishmeal and energy prices.</p><p>Shellfish also align neatly with climate and biodiversity targets. They actively remove nutrients from the water and improve water clarity, making them politically easier to support.</p><p>Crucially, shellfish farms tend to be smaller, family-run operations, meaning growth is often incremental and community-based rather than capital-intensive. Salmon farming contributes €70–€90 million annually to the Irish economy from production alone. Yet production volumes have remained relatively flat for more than a decade.</p><p>The reasons are not economic. Demand for farmed salmon continues to grow across Europe and globally. The barriers are almost entirely regulatory and social.</p><p>New salmon licences in Ireland often take 8–12 years or longer to progress due to overlapping environmental designations, legal challenges and planning delays. Even where sites already exist, expanding biomass limits is extremely difficult.</p><p>Capital exposure is also much higher. A modern salmon site, with cages, feed systems, boats and processing infrastructure, carries multi-million-euro setup costs before a single fish is sold. Once stocked, farmers carry biological risk for 18–24 months before harvest.</p><p>The reward can be strong, but volatility is real. Even where environmental assessments are completed, legal challenges can delay activation for years.</p><p>Finfish faces an even tougher version of the same problem. The demand exists. The capital is available. Even where salmon numbers stay flat, the secondary economy around finfish continues to expand.</p><p>This creates two very different rural development models:</p><ul><li>Shellfish = distributed, locally embedded growth.</li><li>Finfish = concentrated, high-capital industrial growth.<br></li></ul><p>Both matter. Finfish still delivers major economic punch per site, but remains throttled by regulation and public resistance.</p><p>The real growth potential, in purely practical terms, sits with shellfish over the next decade. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>There’s been plenty of talk about the €80 million biomethane plant going up in Duleek, Co Meath, but for farmers living within reach of it, this isn’t just another renewable-energy headline. It could genuinely change how some farms earn their money. The developer, Carbon AMS, says the plant will pull in grass and other feedstocks from farms within roughly a 15 km radius and will produce around 42 GWh of biomethane a year. Training takes five years, and the first graduates won’t hit the ground until the early 2030s. ATU’s New Vet Course: Transforming Rural Ireland

<h3>Introduction</h3><p>Irish grocery inflation has edged back to 6.06%, and while that may make for a tidy headline, it doesn’t automatically translate into good news for the people producing the food. When prices start to soften at the checkout, it usually means someone further up the chain has taken the hit, and it’s rarely the retailer.</p><p>Yes, shoppers are beginning to get a small breather (if even), and yes, grocery sales still grew 5.5% over the past 12 weeks. But that rise comes from people spending more, not buying more. Farmers know that story all too well: higher turnover doesn’t mean healthier margins.</p><p>Meanwhile, nothing about the day-to-day costs of running a farm has fallen in any meaningful way. It’s a sign of the pressure in Irish homes, but it also shows how retailers are positioning themselves: hold footfall, push promotions, lean on cheaper alternatives, and try to keep basket sizes stable.</p><p>But cheaper shelves don’t mean cheaper farming. Farmers will need to watch signals closely from factories and co-ops.</p><p><strong>3. What happens if inflation picks up again?</strong><br>Core inflation remains sticky, and energy costs could jump with little warning. <h3>Introduction</h3><p>There’s been a noticeable shift in Irish food habits over the past few years, and farmers are in the middle of it whether they realise it or not. People are getting tired of food that feels like it’s travelled further than they ever will. They want to know who they’re buying from. They want to support local families, not vague-sounding companies. And they’re willing to pay for that connection.</p><p>When you look at the bigger picture, this makes perfect sense. Ireland’s agri-food sector is enormous, around €29.5 billion in annual turnover and supporting close to 165,000 jobs. It’s a powerhouse. But most of that value disappears into long supply chains. Farmers do the work; someone else clips the ticket.</p><p>At the same time, almost 90% of our dairy output is exported. So Irish shoppers are now asking: “Why is my butter coming from continental Europe while the farm down the road is producing some of the best milk in the world?”</p><p>That curiosity, and, frankly, frustration, is driving a quiet but serious demand for local food. It’s a proper shift in buying behaviour.</p><p>Teagasc has highlighted that income from farm diversification has been steadily climbing, and a lot of that is coming from direct-to-consumer sales. It’s a simple equation: people trust the farmer more than the middleman. They want to know where their food came from and whether it was produced responsibly.</p><p>And here’s the thing: Irish farmers already have what consumers want. One report put it at just 0.4% involved in on-farm food processing or selling their own produce. Hardly a crowded market.</p><p>But that’s changing.</p><p>Take Rostellan Farm in Cork. A family dairy farm that didn’t just stick to selling into the traditional system, they built a farm shop, started selling milk and produce directly, and turned the place into a real community hub. They’re proof that customers respond when they can put a face and a place to the food they’re buying.</p><p>Or the case of Brian and Cency McLeer in Co. Louth. After seeing a milk vending machine abroad, they brought the idea home and set one up on their own farm. And they’re right, a chat at a market stall does more for loyalty than any advertising campaign.</p><p>But direct sales go far beyond markets. Farmers are already used to operating under tight regulations, this is just a slightly different flavour of the same thing.</p><p>The key is to get your paperwork right from the start and keep things simple.
